38 week growth scan

I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant and I had a growth scan on Tuesday - 36 + 3 days (as My Midwife stated that I was measuring 31 cm at 34 weeks pregnant - she wanted me to get a growth scan just to be safe).

Baby was weighing 5 lb 5 oz based on that report.
I had my midwife appointment on the Wednesday, but not with my usual midwife this time.
She looked at the report and asked me if I smoke which I said NO then she asked me if I’ve had any headaches and I also said NO to that😭.

She then wanted to put a request in when she reached the hospital later on that day to get me in for another growth scan (she wanted to speak to a Dr about this first) in two weeks time when I would be 38 weeks and a few days.

She then measured my belly and I was measuring at 28 cm at 36 + 3 days - She said it could be because the head is engaged…

Afterwards, she didn’t wait to go to the hospital she put a request in then and there in the system.

She asked me if I was a small baby and if my baby’s father was small as a baby - we were both 7lbs but I was 12oz , he was 9oz - normal healthy weight.

Moving forward…

I received a phone call the following day from her to say that my next growth scan was on the 14th - she also stated that afterwards I will have to sit down with two obstetricians to discuss things further following the report…

I’m not sure what needs to be discussed so I’m a bit nervous about that…

Has anyone had a similar story???

Do you think I could be induced???

Please note that I am taking Ferrous Sulfate + Sertraline daily

Fundal measurements are not very accurate, especially as they were taken by different midwives. And, in all honesty, neither are growth scans later in pregnancy. There is quite a large margin for error and they get less and less accurate the closer to your due date.

5lbs 5oz sounds totally fine for 36 weeks and coincidentally is exactly what my baby weighed at that time. I also had a small bump and no one ever suggested that there was a problem.

If you've had a healthy pregnancy, baby is happily moving around, and there are no abnormalities then I would definitely be asking some hard questions about what they think the problem is. Make sure everything is explained to you properly and in full.

The last weeks of your pregnancy should be about taking care of yourself and getting comfortable and rested for birth not worrying about (what currently sounds like) a non-existent problem.

Yeah you're right baby girl is very active, I'm 5'8 - and slim 12 stone now during pregnancy, was 10 before.

My weight isn't a concern either.

Will be asking the Obstetricians what really is going on as it's taking a toll on my mental health now, just keep overthinking it all.

I had similar, very long story short I was induced at 38+2 with DD arriving 4 days later at 38+6. She was a petite but healthy 6lb 8oz, which was bigger than they’d predicted at our 38wk scan. Ultimately growth scans are all a bit finger in the air at this stage so I’d try not to worry too much x

What does DD mean? I'm new to this forum hehe - thank you for sharing your story x

Find it all very odd? Deffo bypass midwife and ask whoever sees u after the scan. Gor 4 more weeks for baby to put weight on and 5lb plus already sounds nice and healthy so far she sounds very odd midwife?

I will definitely be asking questions at the appointment, just trying to not stress over it so much

They usually follow up with growth scans 2 weeks apart to make sure baby is following the same centile line.. if baby hasn’t grown much/at all in 2 weeks, they’ll likely want to induce as it’s a risk to leave baby in if it’s not growing.

For what it’s worth, 5lbs odd at 36 weeks sounds pretty good! My baby wasn’t growing and I had her at 36 weeks but she only weighed 3lb 9oz.

Yeah true, thank you Forever😊
