First Midwife Appointment

Hi, I am 4 weeks pregnant. I called my GP surgery Wednesday to register myself as pregnant. I was told to self refer myself online, which I have done. I haven't heard from the midwife department yet and was wondering how long it usually take before I hear anything. I'm so excited & feel slightly impatient but I'm just desperate to get the show on the road 😂
I'm in Southampton FYI 😌

I think mine was at least a week or 2, I referred at about 6/7 weeks and they gave me my first appointment for 10 weeks xx

Coffeellama · 05/03/2023 08:18

You’ve barely even missed a period yet OP, itl be a while yet! Varies depending on where you live but I’d say anywhere between 6-11 weeks for the first appointment.

I'm in Fareham so close to you! I've referred to Portsmouth for care and I referred when I was 5 weeks (because on Portsmouth website it says you can refer from positive test) and I'm still yet to hear anything. This Thursday coming it will be two weeks since I referred. Think I'm going to chase when I'm about 7/8 weeks. It does seem everywhere is different in times of getting back to people!

I'm guessing you referred through the SHIP portal online for the area?

Thankyou. I'm 3 days overdue period?

Ahh ☺️ yes, I've self referred through SHIP. I know it's really early but I'm just so excited and can't wait for it to feel more "real"

I've wanted this for so long so as you can imagine I'm just so desperate for this to feel more real!!

The midwife called me on Friday to book my appointment. I was 6 weeks, and it’s booked for when I’ll be 9 weeks. Don’t expect anything for another week or two, you’ve only just missed your period and the chance of loss is still fairly high.

ChloeN · 05/03/2023 09:19

@HannahLouLou24 its so normal to be excited, don’t let anyone make you feel bad! ☺️ on my first pregnancy I probably referred about the same time xx

I think your booking app is usually at the 9 week mark as standard 💕

Bellybobs · 05/03/2023 10:14

Usually 10 weeks here, then first scan few weeks later. They don't do much in the beginning. Congratulations!

Wrenegade · 05/03/2023 10:40

Also fall under Southampton!
I couldn’t self refer until I was at least 6 weeks. I then hadn’t heard by 10 weeks so I did call the admin team, they told me it would be at least 2 more weeks until I heard from them. The very next day I received a letter through the post for my 12 week scan appointment and then the booking midwife called me to schedule my bloods and first midwife appointment. All fell on the same day which was exactly 12 weeks.

It can take a little while to hear back but they will get there, if you’re getting closer to the 12 week mark and haven’t heard from them, just give them a call.

Nursemumma92 · 05/03/2023 15:29

In my area you have your first appointment at 10 weeks so it will be a little while yet before they allocate the appointments. Congratulations though 😃

allgoodthings84 · 05/03/2023 16:09

Congratulations. In my area you self refer to midwife by phone and they book you in there and then for 8-11 weeks. Mine was at 10 weeks then my 12 week scan was at 12+4 weeks (can be 11-14 weeks). You may not hear for a few weeks as have a while as yet. It’s hard when you’re so excited but miscarriage is more likely before 8 weeks so they wait.

ukMummyof1 · 05/03/2023 18:12

I'm also in Southampton and from what I remember in my last pregnancy (last year) I didn't have my appointment until about 12/13 weeks🥴 I'm now 5+6 weeks pregnant so hopefully it's sooner this time! Xx

WineCap · 05/03/2023 23:30

I self-referred at 4 weeks and had my appointment at 7 weeks this time. I had my first appointment at 8 weeks with my first pregnancy.

PointyMcguire · 06/03/2023 02:37

Where we are you can’t self-refer until 8wks, booking in appt is usually 10/11wks with first scan at 12/13wks so as others have said it could be a while before much happens.

Kayycatt · 06/03/2023 05:23

I self referred myself following GP's advice. Got a call from the midwife to collect my health details when I was 8+4 and the blood tests done on 9 weeks. I am now waiting for my dating scan which will happen when I am 11+6. I actually don't feel I am pregnant so I am just looking forward to the dating scan to 'confirm' it.

Good luck to you and hope you will hear from the midwife soon x

Superunknown1 · 06/03/2023 07:26

I referred at about 5 and a half weeks, my GP did it for me. I had issues where my referral wasn’t picked up and did spend the last week chasing (I’m now 11+1 I think) and had a call Saturday for a booking appointment same day. I wouldn’t start to panic until the deadlines for bloods etc. are coming up, can always contact your GP for an update maybe or I found the hospital I put as my preferred location for birth and care when I referred have been more helpful than anyone. Congrats!!

Leiapup · 06/03/2023 21:10

I’m in Eastleigh, also registered early! I self referred online on 23rd February, got a call from the midwife on 3rd March to book in for an appointment which will be at 8.5 weeks 😊

RPost · 08/03/2023 17:09

Congrats! They called me in at week 12 ish for a scan. I think I had an appointment at week 8 ish just with a GP but it was just to take blood etc.

pinkpirlie · 08/03/2023 21:04

I'm 12 weeks tomorrow and still haven't had my booking in. Have my dating scan on Tuesday but still not heard from the midwife. 🤔

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

Sagittarius25 · 10/03/2023 14:02

Just wanted to update because we are in the same area/self-referred through the same system.

It took two weeks from my self-referral to when I then got an email to say I'd been added to badger notes (online maternity notes), however I couldn't log in yet because I hadn't got my passphrase from midwife. Today I had email to say my referral has been fully processed, been given my passphrase for badger notes and I am now into that. I have my booking appointment for when I will be 10+6.

So it may be that they will get back to you within a couple weeks, however I self-referred when I was 5 weeks, not 4 weeks, so was already a bit further along. 😊
