Is anyone else drinking non-alcoholic alcoholic drinks?

E.g. zero % Guinness or Heineken, 0% wine, 0% gin?

I have been in place of when I'd usually be drinking alcohol, lately at Christmas. I absolutely love Guinness and the 0% one tastes exactly the same as the regular type. I'm not a big fan of fizzy pop drinks and drinking plain water feels a bit miserable around company.

My mother has just called me to let me know what she just had to say something after seeing what I was doing to myself/the baby at Christmas and doing some research and discovering that it isn't safe to be drinking these beers. A cursory Google search marches out the same point about the safe amount of alcohol being unknown so best to abstain.

I'm aware that the zero % alcohol contains 0.05% alcohol but that's such trace amounts I think it surely can't actually be doing any harm? It's not like I'm chugging gallons of the stuff and my diet is generally healthy aside from the Christmas chocolate and biscuits binge

Either way she's got into my head so I just wanted to ask if anyone else was also drinking alcohol alternatives?

I will ask my midwife at the next appointment as well, but that's not for another few weeks.

They will be no worse than a can of coke.

Have a half a real Guinness occasionally! The iron is good for you.

I’ve been drinking non-alcoholic wine mixed with orange juice over Christmas - not in huge quantities but a couple of glasses here and there.
The problem with pregnancy is everyone wants to have an opinion and you could drive yourself down a very scary hole just Googling everything.

Yes, absolutely. I do Google most things, and to be fair I abide by all the rules e.g. cheese, fish, alfalfa 🙄

My mum just has a special skill of getting under my skin. I need a sense check when it comes to her :)

There's more alcohol in a banana, apple juice or bread roll than there is in an alcohol-free Guinness.

I drank a few non alcoholic beers over Christmas when I was pregnant. Got a bottle of non alcoholic fizz to drink during a friends birthday get-together, and had a couple of Seedlip gins on occasion too. Both me and baby were absolutely fine. I don't think you have much to worry about!

I drank Heineken 0% and Corona Zero - both very good.

I also liked the Freixenet Zero - prosecco substitute.

I've been drinking Heineken & Guinness 0% for weeks, probably 4-5 a week? Even asked my midwife - she was more concerned about my caffeine intake Blush

I drank a lot of alcohol free prosecco when I was pregnant and breastfeeding. Randomly I don't like alcoholic prosecco, but the alcohol free version was delicious and made me feel like I wasn't being left out at social occasions.

Hatscats · 02/01/2023 23:10

Orange juice is more alcoholic!

Pinktruffle · 02/01/2023 23:51

I drank alcohol free gin and rum throughout two pregnancies. Both kids are happy and healthy

While I think it's best to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy, i draw the line at those non alcoholic drinks. The amount of residual alcohol is very small and as long as you don't drink liters of it should be fine.
I have stopped drinking those as unfortunately I have gestational diabetes, and do feel left out toasting on just water during special occasions 😢. So enjoy it if you can!

Haha I do miss coffee! I have 2 black teas per day and occasionally (1-2 times per month when I'm in the office) an espresso. Sadly can't stand the decaff stuff!

Don’t worry - mum’s are sometimes the worst!
As long as you’re not doing the things you shouldn’t be doing which I’m sure you’re not (!) then you’re good.
Mum’s forget advice changes a lot since they had children and things on Google aren’t always true.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :)

Apparently there is more iron in a bottle of Guinness than a bag of nails.

So my Grandad used to say.

MammaTo · 14/08/2024 20:30

Yes I drank the 0% stuff while pregnant and baby was fine. The 0% freixenet sparkling rose was my drink of choice.
