Hello

At what appointment do you hear the babies heartbeat?

I'm going to make sure partner is at that appointment! I have my 1st midwife appointment on the 23rd January! X

My midwife told me it'll be at my 25 week appointment.
It's generally not advised at 16 weeks anymore because it can't always be picked up, but some midwifes will try.
Ask at your appointment to be double sure xx

It varies by Trust so check with your midwife, mine did do it at the 16 week appointment.

Mine did it at 16weeks, but some don’t. So might be worth asking at your first appointment when they start doing it, at which appt.

Your 12 / 20 week scans are when you will see the baby and hear the heartbeat. You may have a doppler to hear the heartbeat at midwife appointments from 16 weeks.

So the first time you will see/hear anything is the 12 week scan. Personally I would prioritise the scans and not worry much about the midwife appointments.

Ok thank you ladies! Xxx

I had mine at 16 weeks but she had trouble finding the heartbeat... could hear it moving but couldn't pin the heartbeat. Had to go back a week later for reassurance but she still had trouble.

I had my 12 week scan last Wednesday and even though I had a private scan at 8 weeks this scan was so much cooler! I had to have a combined internal and external scan because of a medical condition however the scan was so in depth we saw and heard the heartbeat with a rate of 159. We saw the butterfly pattern of the brain, we saw kidneys, bladder, stomach, pancreas, arms and legs and spine (baby kept moving around making that one difficult), checked the arteries in the umbilical cord and the placenta. It looked so much more like a baby in this scan as opposed to the 8 week and so much more bigger! We checked the NF which measured normal and also had screening bloods which also came through low risk.

overall we got to check everything at my 12 weeks, minus gender which will be the next scan even though I’m sure i could see genitals on there too 🧐lol.

good luck.

It's not an exact science - and please do not buy a home kit, notoriously unreliable. My midwife preferred an ear trumpet which she reckoned was more reliable (but I couldn't hear of course).

FirstTimeTryer93 · 30/12/2022 11:57

I haven't heard the heartbeat at any of my midwife appointments and I've just had my 28 week one. Must depend where you go x

emmaloubx · 30/12/2022 12:03

Yeah il probably just wait until midwife shows me!
I actually feel so normal I keep forgetting about being pregnant! Then hits me like a tone of bricks again 😂
Just tired! I almost don't believe it! Xx

Mine offered it at 16w but warned me that it can't always be found and that it isn't indicative of anything being wrong so I'd weigh up how you'll feel anxiety wise if she can't quite capture it. Probs better waiting if you've any doubt x
