5 weeks pregnant - brown spotting

I got my longer for bfp around a week ago. I have taken tests every few days and they have shown strong lines, getting stronger as time is going on. This morning is attached.

I’ve gone to the toilet and there was slight brown spotting in my underwear, and a tiny bit of brown spotting when wiping. No pain or cramps. I am feeling slightly nauseous but I think that is likely because I am now panicking.

Is there anything I should do? With my previous pregnancy, I had a suspected ectopic pregnancy at 8 weeks with lots of pain. It turned out to be a large ovarian cyst which needed surgical removal. I am at a slightly higher chance of this happening again - would it be worth calling 111? I appreciate the health service is so overrun at the moment. I can’t think straight - any advice would be amazing Thankyou

Try not to panic..
I am 12 weeks pregnant and at 9 weeks I had a MASSIVE bleed. The early pregnancy unit wouldn't see me without a GP referral, the GPs at the practice I am registered to don't work afternoons(!!!) so ended up driving miles and miles to be turned away from 2 walk in centres as they were full to capacity. The following few mornings my surgery was fully booked.

Anyway... I've never seen a GP and didn't know who my midwife was as they hadn't got round to my booking in appointment.

At 10 weeks I finally got my booking in appointment and the midwife said brown blood is nothing to worry about!! She's not worried about the big bleed I had as apparently if it's anything sinister it carries on and on!

@lovechickencrisps thankyou for replying. That sounds awful - I can’t imagine how stressful that was for you. I assume everything is ok now? ☺️

Don't panic. It is very common to have some implantation bleeding around 5/6 weeks, which I never knew until I also had some brown bloody discharge just a few days after my bfp and went to see someone. The doctor said, like the previous poster, that brown blood is nothing to worry about.

Congratulations, and once the spotting stops I know you'll be much more able to enjoy your pregnancy!

Also had brown spotting as you describe at 5/6 weeks and all was fine! X

I have no idea. They can't scan me until 5th Jan when I'll be 14 weeks.
Sorry for my rant earlier.
My main point was that brown blood is nothing to worry about! Hope all is well with you.

Just hang in there for a bit. My spotting lasted for about a week.

Landlubber2019 · 24/12/2022 22:02

Brown blood suggests it is old and if you are not experiencing pain, this can be quite normal.

Try not to worry, there is absolutely nothing you can do either way.

Good luck x

@OnTheDrive dont worry, I had this with my dd16 and twins 11. Twins was most of the time I was pregnant. You will be fine! I had to be induced with twins!

OnTheDrive · 25/12/2022 11:56

@Jokat A week? How did you stay sane??

@Landlubber2019 Thankyou - that’s what I am trying to remind myself. What will be will be. I think it’s the uncertainty that’s worse

@Workinghardeveryday Thankyou - it’s so reassuring to hear it CAN be normal

I’ve not had any further cramps in the night and only the tiniest amount of brown tinged CM when wiping so I’m hoping the fact that nothing has progressed means it is going to be ok. I’m trying to carry on like normal for my DS but it’s difficult to keep my mind off it x

Honestly op, you are fine!!! When it first happened to me I went to hospital and had scan, then again and again lol.

The midwives were lovely but obviously they thought I was crazy because it’s so common.

Enjoy your day, you are worry for nothing my lovely x

Hello! I hope that you are okay!
I know that every experience is different; but thought id share my rollercoaster with bleeds/brown bleeds..

I had my first at 5 weeks; i was terrified and phoned EPU who scanned me and saw the start of a pregnancy.
I have then bled red blood at 9 weeks, 11 weeks, 14 weeks, 16 weeks, 19 weeks and the most recent at 21 weeks.. im 22+4 now and all is absolutely fine with the baby and they have never found any reason for the bleeding.. just told im a lady who will likely bleed throughout..
I’ve also had brown spotting in and amongst, I know it’s so scary when it happens and I am hoping for a positive outcome for you but it can happen and be okay 😅

My EPU we’re fantastic each and every time and now the maternity assessment unit are amazing- they told me they would rather see me weekly than me not approach anybody and need the help 🙂 x

Just an update - I went into hospital a few days ago via ambulance in agony. They thought it was ectopic pregnancy. Turned out to be a cyst on my ovary and lots of free fluid. I had emergency surgery to address this (laparoscopy)

I have another scan on Monday - I’ve continued to have spotting throughout - I am a nervous wreck. I’ve woken up with morning with slightly more spotting than usual. I am terrified it is going to be bad news at the scan on Monday. It’s been a horrendous few weeks, and I know one of the risks of the surgery can be miscarriage. I’m approx 6+4 so still so so early.

I'm so sorry to hear that. You must be so stressed out and worried 😟 I really hope you will get through this without losing the pregnancy 🙏

OnTheDrive · 06/01/2023 18:41

@Jokat Thankyou, i appreciate your comment. I’m trying to stay positive but it’s impossible tbh. It’s all I can think about.
