Borderline low amniotic fluid at 32wks

I’m 32+5 and had a private scan yesterday, for reassurance more than anything else. Scan showed baby is fine, growth in line with predicted curve (albeit 14th percentile 😕) and placenta functioning well. However she noted my amniotic fluid is lower than she’d like at 8.93 AFI and referred me to the hospital for monitoring.

The hospital asked me to head in for an assessment, checked my obs, and hooked us up for movement monitoring, all of which were fine. They said to them 8.93 wasn’t a concern (I’ve read between both 8 and 18 and 5 and 20 are considered normal, so appreciate I’m more likely borderline low at this stage rather than low low) but as I was there already they’d do an internal check which showed my cervix was still posterior facing and closed and the swab for amniotic fluid came back negative. I asked if I needed to have another scan in a couple of weeks as advised by the private sonographer and was told there was no need, however 10mins after I left I received a call from the hospital requesting I go back tomorrow for a scan so they have the findings on my records.

Until then I’m just trying to rest up and hydrate as much as possible, as admittedly I’ve not been drinking as much as I usually would recently and have probably overdone it a bit. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar results and if so what what was the outcome? I had a miscarriage at the start of the year so have felt like I’ve been walking a tightrope with my anxiety this time around and am desperately trying not to spiral into all out panic.

Hi I’m sorry I know this post is very old but just wondering how you got on? I’m 36+4 and had a growth scan for reduced FH which showed babes on 10th centile. 2 weeks later went back and baby is now 32nd centile (yay) but amniotic fluid is now 5th centile. They checked if my waters had gone but they haven’t and I now have to have another scan in a week? Wondering whether it can just increase or if my section will be brought forward! At least I’ll be full term!

Hi @DrH44 just to say I was similar and they brought section forward and everything went well :) though I do think being dehydrated on scan day can make a difference though as op said

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 14:51

Thanks so much for replying! Interesting- I’m wondering whether dehydration would have shown up on the urine tests I had that day and day before though? Wouldn’t it show keytones?

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 14:51

Did you have your section at 38 weeks?

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 15:00

@Writerz34 sorry I don’t really use Mumsnet so I forgot to tag you x

Writerz34 · 15/09/2023 15:03

Yep I did, they're fully cooked by then anyway! Good point, you'd probably know if you were dehydrated (I certainly didn't think I was)

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 15:11

@Writerz34 yeah I’ve just messaged my midwife because there’s nothing on the system! Did you have two episodes of reduced fluid or just one? I was 36+4 yesterday and have to go back on Thursday at 37+4 to check (it’s at 5th centile atm 7.4cm and the individual pools are 3,3 and 1.2) I suppose according to Dr Google that’s not too low but the centile is? and the midwife said the section would likely be brought forward if the same or lower…
it’s the uncertainty that’s a killer isn’t it?
wondering what the likelihood is of it just going back up?! I wonder would they let me hold off til 38 weeks. Sorry I know you don’t know I’m just ranting and raving now haha thanks for your help

Writerz34 · 15/09/2023 15:20

Just one at 37 weeks but I think if you're having a section anyway they just think why take the risk.

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 15:24

@Writerz34 yeah that makes sense. They may be sent me away as I wasn’t quite 37 weeks. When they identified it for you when did your section happen- like the next day? And how low were your fluids at that point? Sorry for all the questions x

Writerz34 · 15/09/2023 15:31

No worries, I afraid I can't remember how low but I think it was borderline. The section was booked for a few days time, but I guess it'll depend how low it is!

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 15:34

Ok that makes sense! Thanks so much for your help/sharing your experience! I’ll be prepared for it so!

DrH44 · 15/09/2023 16:06

@Writerz34 meant to ask were you given steroids?

Writerz34 · 15/09/2023 16:12

No I wasn't, I think at 38 weeks you don't need them but I'm not sure when the cut off is.
