Pregnancy after miscarriage or lingering hcg?

Hello!

It’s my first time posting and hoping to tap in to some wisdom and experience!

Bit of a long story so stick with me 😅

I lost a pregnancy last month (3rd pregnancy, 1st miscarriage). I had a scan at 7+3 (6th September) which showed a baby with a heartbeat. The next day I started bleeding and it all came out in one go. I had a scan (9th September) which showed it was complete - nothing left at all. I also had a blood test which showed my hcg had fallen right down to 108.

The following week I took a pregnancy test which was negative. I didn’t feel pregnant anymore.

But here’s where it gets confusing 😅

On Saturday (1st October) I had what looked EXACTLY like implantation bleeding. And for the past few days I have FELT pregnant. Having been pregnant 3 times I feel like I really recognise it. I took a test and it was positive. The next day a stronger positive. Then I went for a bloodtest (4th October) and my hcg was 109. 1 higher than my post miscarriage blood test 3 weeks earlier.

I was really confused by this. I spoke to my doctor and he said perhaps some of the pregnancy was left behind and sent me for a scan today (6th October). The scan showed nothing. No old pregnancy, no new pregnancy. I asked my doctor if there was any chance I was pregnant again but it was too early to see anything, as I’d only be just 4 weeks. He said no.

My question is - is he right? Can he be certain I am not pregnant again already? I thought perhaps the scan showed I hadn’t even ovulated which was why he was so certain. But I don’t know if they checked that or if it would even be possible to see.

Anyone have any experience with static hcg levels after a confirmed complete miscarriage, or pregnancy straight after miscarriage, or 4 week scans showing nothing?

Thank you!!

Update - went from 1-2 weeks on clear blue digital on Wednesday morning to 2-3 weeks this morning (Friday).

Anyone had rising hcg after complete miscarriage and nothing shown on scan?

I haven’t for any experience of rising HCG after a miscarriage but had a very similar experience to you, I miscarried in June, HCG dropped very quickly and I got a negative result the week after. I then got pregnant again straight away without a period in between. From what you’ve said I don’t think you can rule out a new pregnancy, to get 2-3 weeks on a CB it indicates HCG of at least 153 so it’s trending in the right direction for a new pregnancy. He should at least bring you in for another blood test 48 hrs later to see if your HCG is still rising, rather than just saying there is no pregnancy - from what I’ve read until HCG is around 1000 they wouldn’t expect to see anything on a scan. I had a scan at 5+4 (when my HCG was around 2000) and literally all they could see was an empty sac. Can you bypass your GP and go straight to your EPU? Mine is walk-in so I’m able to and they might provide better advice (sorry I’m UK based so that might not be helpful if you’re not in UK too).

I’m so sorry for your loss, I know how devastating it is and I really hope this one works out for you.

As above, if you’re this early on there wouldn’t be anything to show just yet. In another 2/3 weeks I’d expect to see something definitely.

Your most fertile post miscarriage so it is entirely possible. Fingers crossed for you OP!

Thanks so much for your replies! They’ve scheduled another bloodtest for me for Monday.

My gut is telling me I’m pregnant again but I just find it so odd that he was so sure I wasn’t. He seemed to think I hadn’t even ovulated. So I feel like I must have missed something.

I know from experience that Clear Blue can give false negatives or say you’re earlier than you are (if you’ve drunk a lot of water for instance) but I can’t see how it would be possible for it to detect hcg that wasn’t there. And I know the level was 109 previously from the blood test so it’s definitely gone up by at least 45. What possible explanation could there be 🤔

Do you think the most likely thing is that the sonographer missed something? He seemed so confident.

Very interesting to hear you got pregnant right away @Hrf1503 - shows it is possible! Thanks for sharing your experience. I really hope I am, and I feel pregnant again, but wonder of that’s just wishful thinking.

And thanks@ChickinMarango! I was wondering if maybe he could tell because my womb lining wasn’t thick enough. I remember with my first pregnancy they could tell me which side I ovulated from. So maybe he could see I hadn’t ovulated from either side? Wish I could call and ask but seems impossible to get hold of anyone specific.

And if I’m not pregnant, and there’s nothing left of the miscarried pregnancy, then what on earth is is my body doing 😂

So frustrating because I suppose I’ll just have to wait for blood test results and ultimately another scan I assume. Hopefully with a different less dismissive sonographer!!!

Such good news @Mum20182020 that looks like really positive increase in HCG ☺️ what did your Dr say?

CoconutQueen · 11/10/2022 13:00

This is a new pregnancy. Congratulations!

Mum20182020 · 13/10/2022 09:35

Hi everyone! Just had a repeat scan which showed a normal 5 week pregnancy!! I’m over the moon!! It was the same doctor doing the scan as before and he apologised for getting it so wrong.

Thank you so much for the support in this thread 🙂💖

I’m so delighted for you, congratulations! What a rollercoaster I’m glad he apologised.

All the best for this pregnancy! The early days of pregnancy after a loss can be so anxiety inducing (I had some bleeding around 5 weeks which made it even worse) but I’m currently 18 weeks and everything is looking healthy ☺️

I think I may be experiencing similar to you. New pregnancy after a miscarriage without a period inbetween. I have written a thread about it after some possible “implantation spotting” . Your story is amazing and filling me with hope x
