Hello fellow mumsnetters,

i am about to be a married woman! I am also about to start a new job for a US company (remotely) but can’t seem to find a single clear answer on whether I would still be entitled to SMP. I am living in the UK and will be the entire time I work for this company. I would very very much like to start my family next year but do not want to get to that stage and be caught out.

also very sorry if this is in the wrong thread, this is my first post.

can anyone advise?

What does it say in your contract about how you'll be paid? If you're living full time in the UK you will be UK tax resident so do they pay your tax through PAYE or are you filing self assessment? If PAYE then so long as you meet the requirements for time served you should be entitled to SMP through payroll. If not PAYE then i think you should be able to claim the alternative maternity allowance directly from HMRC.

I haven’t got my contract yet but I believe it is PAYE and they pay my tax for me, I am not self employed in any way.

thank you for responding, I very much appreciate it. I did think it would be strange to not be entitled to it but you can’t be too sure!
