Does anyone have any ideas of any treats I can have with GD that don’t raise my sugar levels?

Oppo ice cream paired with some seeds and full fat cream.

I used to have the occasional finger of bueno, go for a long walk after and lots of water. Although I had ok tolerances to some food, others (eggs!) would send my readings through the roof so it's trial and error.

Join the gestational diabetes Facebook group- tonnes of inspiration on there!

I was going to say diabetes uk generally have recipes and food ideas but sadly, it seems, treats are not featured! A couple of squares of dark chocolate or a pot of sugar free jelly seem to be it!

I did see something recently on TikTok about whipping low sugar jelly crystals up with fat free yogurt for a low calorie treat as it made a tasty mousse, maybe that would be worth looking at carb wise?

There are lots of peanut butter type recipes on diabetes recipe sites, things like:

A small something after a meal is your best bet. I had the occasional custard cream biscuit after a meal and my sugars would be ok. Or maybe a low sugar hot chocolate?

Go to the gestational diabetes you website. They have loads of free recipes on there. I distinctly remember a chocolate brownie one that was delicious and I ate loads of when pregnant with GD. Also, strawberries and thick cream. Lush.

I did the lindt dark mint chocolate, just 2 squares, I found the fibre one popcorn bars were good for me,fulfil protein bars,I'd only have half, the hazelnut whip was my favourite, whey hey ice cream I liked I'd have it with some strawberries & that worked well 😀

For me it's oppo ice cream, Nature Valley Protein Bars and Lindahl's Protein Pudding (chocolate flavour). All a bit pricey though! I can do the odd square or dark chocolate too, and a granny smith apple with peanut butter. Oh and strawberries or sugar free jelly with ice cream. It's not all bad! I do miss proper treats so much though.

*should say strawberries or jelly with cream, not ice cream - unfortunately!

Thank you so much guys, I’ll definitely try these ideas and see how they work for me! I’ve been having berries with cream, sugar free jelly, and oppo ice cream with peanut butter (yum) and my levels have been fine with these. I’m almost 32 weeks, but I’m so sick and tired of this gestational diabetes already.

Oh yeah, I’ve also been having skinny crunch bars which are so good and my sugar levels are always great after eating one of those. The mint choc chip flavour is amazing 🤩

Hi @dreamerkr , I don’t have gestational diabetes but do have type 1 diabetes so I feel your pain although I think it must be much worse with GD as at least they let me take insulin !

Some low sugar things I like

  • Amazon sell sugar free reeses chocolate peanut butter cups
  • https://theskinnyfoodco.com/collections/notguilty-skinny-bakery-snack-section/products/skinny-notguilty-low-sugar-hazelnut-milky-flavoured-spread-350g# . It’s a really low sugar alternative to Nutella, obviously not as good but needs must.
  • Sugar free weathers originals (I am old before my time)
Glitteringapples · 12/09/2022 21:59

I don’t know if you can eat bananas in moderation? but I like to make a frozen banana smoothie with sugar free peanut butter ( like pip and nut), protein powder, milk (or cream) and a bit of high quality cocoa. It tastes really amazing!

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 12/09/2022 22:04

I've been having a couple of squares of Lindt dark chocolate 70% crumbled into double cream and have been loving it 😆 sugars stay low

Annabananna1 · 12/09/2022 22:06

Sugar free Maryland type cookies. I used to get them in morrisons

riotlady · 13/09/2022 08:46

Oooh I used to make a bowl of raspberries (one of the lowest sugar fruits, surprisingly), plain natural yoghurt and top it with a crumbled up fibre one brownie. Felt like a proper pudding!

dreamerkr · 13/09/2022 11:20

Thanks so much guys!

I understand I can’t have juice with GD, but is fresh fruit juice allowed that you make at home? Like freshly squeezed orange juice?
