hey guys
i’m breastfeeding my 6 week old and she’s started to bring up milk after most feeds, sometimes she lets it out straight away and other times she waits for half hour and when she’s laying down let’s it out then. i burp her and sometimes she lets it out then too. she also has lots of saliva which comes up too 😩

she has started doing this thing when she lays down like she’s grunting. at first i thought she was doing a poo but checked and nothing but she keeps doing it and can tell she’s in pain 😩 ive tried keeping her upright after each feed. she gets hiccups frequently and has them sometimes when i’m feeding her.

it’s hard at night because i don’t want to put her down due to spitting up because one night i put her down and she went to sleep so then so did i but then i woke to feed her, her mattress was wet because she must have spit up. i felt so bad and like a awful mum that i slept whilst my baby was in pain. is there anything i can do to help her? what do you think this is?
or anything i can buy to give to her? would infacol be good?

thank you

I am not an expert so talk your doctor or HV, but this sounds very common. And you are absolutely not a terrible mother!! If she had been in pain she would have been screaming, so the fact she was sleeping too means she was fine. Babies at this age spit up a lot. My daughter spit up a lot and the HV called it "happy spit" or something like that.

Try keeping her upright as long as possible after feeds and feed smaller amounts more often. It's probably just a phase and her little tummy needs to mature.

Don't worry, you sound like a wonderful mum Flowers

Also I found infacol pretty useless and a massive faff!

Hello! You may want to post this on the breastfeeding support board but I'm sure there will be some on here who can help too.

Baby spitting up a little milk after feeds is v v normal, that's why we have to have muslins close at all times! But if it's loads of milk every time (like the entire feed quantity) or she seems in pain it's a good idea to get her checked out. Like you say, something like infacol might help, also keeping her upright after feeds. Can you put her in a sling and have her nap on you during the day in an upright position? Also maybe some tummymassage might help, it could be she has some wind or constipation and just feeling a bit stuck.

Their digestive systems are v underdeveloped at this age and it can take a while for everything to work smoothly . Breastfeeding will be setting her up in the best way you an for ensuring her digestive system matures well, and you're doing a wonderful job. Not a bad mama at all! Just keep feeding on demand / responsively and get a check up and doctor if you're worried about her vomming too much or in pain - but stuff like this is relatively normal at this age. Always trust your instincts xxx

All sounds normal, unless she’s crying lots in pain I wouldn’t do anything, definitely nothing over the counter as they have no evidence they work. The grunting and straining is normal it’s called infant dyschezia.
just keep an eye on weight and if any worse/very unsettled I would find an IBCLC to check latch.
