Progesterone pessaries

I’ve just turned 8 weeks and saw a baby with a heartbeat on Monday. We were so excited after 3 previous miscarriages- this is the furthest we’ve got to. They put me on progesterone pessaries. Yesterday I started bleeding bright red blood, heavy but has calmed down now and is spotting dark brown. I worried the pessaries have irritated my cervix. I can’t get seen until my next scan in two weeks. Think I will have to pay to go privately. Please does anyone have any experiences from bleeding off the pessaries? X

@1stimeMum2b not on progesterone but I did spot brown blood with my second pregnancy and she was fine. So could be unrelated to the progesterone. Or, if your cervix was irritated by the cyclogest and it's now brown blood, I'd guess that it's just the old blood from that finally making its way out.

I know how awful that feeling is though, been there so many times. Xx

@1stimeMum2b how much spotting is it? I had a lot the first day Tuesday and then it came and went until about Friday, but was very very small amounts (like speckles) xx

@1stimeMum2b got to A&E I am 6 and a half weeks pregnant- I woke up yesterday to bright red blood and then. Down went to A A&E and they were fantastic transferred me to the early pregnancy Unit, did urine samples, blood samples and an external and internal scan.

Mine showed that baby was fine and I seen a heartbeat for the first time. There was a small bleed behind the Sac, they reassured me and gave me open access to go back and forth for the next 2 weeks.

PMAmostofthetime · 15/08/2022 06:09

@1stimeMum2b I should add I'm also on progesterone pessaries. If you think they are irritating you- put them in the back way and try that.

Good luck and I hope everything goes well.

1stimeMum2b · 15/08/2022 07:10

Thank you I’m now putting them in the back way and have had terrible upset stomach especially this morning can’t keep off the toilet! And still spotting brown blood (hopefully old 🙏)

Im seeing the midwife this morning so hopefully she can give me some advice. Will I be able to ask to hear the heartbeat at my first appointment to check everything is ok! X

@1stimeMum2b I am 7+4 and spotting also. varying light brown shades and for 2 weeks now, mostly when I wipe. It scared me to death at first, but I have also had a scan a week ago and saw a little splodge with a strong heartbeat flickering away. The sonographer had a good look but couldn't see any reason for the spotting, everything looked perfect. I am using cyclogest pessaries but have been using them rectally since 4 weeks.. so you would think that I wouldn't get spotting using them rectally... but maybe it's just the extra hormones?? I honestly have no idea but I can completely relate to how you are feeling. The first trimester is tough xxx

@1stimeMum2b sorry to hear you're spotting again, I started spotting this morning too 😔 I'm taking progesterone pessaries as of this morning now.

A little update on breastfeeding and progesterone - I contacted the national breastfeeding network as they have a 'drugs in breast milk' service and here is their reply for anyone else interested:

"Here is a factsheet on progesterone pessaries that should give you the info you need s895428841.websitehome.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/progesterone-pessaries-and-breastfeeding-.pdf
I’ve also attached this factsheet on why the information leaflets give that information re breastfeeding www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/dibm-pil/

There are no reported concerns in the nursling. The main side effect would be reduction in supply, however this would mainly be of concern in the early days when establishing supply. "

Hope this info helps anyone else in the same predicament.

@1stimeMum2b the upset tummy is a thing with taking them rectally, mine did calm down as my body got used to it.

I hope the midwife can reassure you. I don't think you'll get to hear the heartbeat though... they don't usually try until 16 weeks.

Re waiting for the next scan, it's truly agony. All you can do is try to distract yourself until it comes around.

Hello, again. I’m still bleeding brown blood sometimes when I wipe and sometimes on a pad- been every day for two weeks now. Last night I started with cramps and have had a few clots. Is this normal on progesterone? Should I have been bleeding for this long?

@1stimeMum2b what did your MW say earlier in the week? If you're now cramping and passing clots I'd call your midwife again or get in touch with EPU.

glowingtwig · 19/08/2022 09:51

When's your next scan @1stimeMum2b ?

1stimeMum2b · 20/08/2022 07:59

Our next scan is on Monday - so not too long to wait now. My midwife said if it’s brown it’s probably old blood and could be from previous miscarriages. Unfortunately she couldn’t give much advice about the pessaries xx

@1stimeMum2b you're nearly there with the scan and I'll be thinking of you. My husband used to have to pretty much carry me into scans with DS as I was so anxious after all the mc.

I had brown blood with DD and wasn't on progesterone that pregnancy so fingers crossed it's either just normal old blood or the progesterone.

Cmay · 15/11/2022 21:53

@1stimeMum2b i was just wondering how your scan went and how this turned out? I’m currently going through the same thing now following a previous miscarriage

1stimeMum2b · 16/11/2022 06:06

@Cmay im now currently 22 weeks 2 days :) I’ve asked to stay on the progesterone just as pro caution but am taking them anally - haven’t had any problems with them since and we’ve got this far 🙏 I’m so sorry to hear about your loss! I wish you all the best! And here if you need to talk x

1stimeMum2b · 16/11/2022 06:12

@Cmay I've also been taking aspirin this pregnancy, which I was advised on previous posts. This may have nothing to do with how far we have come - but after 3 losses everything was worth a try. You can double check this with your midwife about the aspirin - let me know how you get on x

@1stimeMum2b thank you so much! That is reassuring and I am delighted for you 🥰 I have a growth scan in 2 weeks and I’ll be 9 weeks so I’m hoping the pessaries will have worked their magic by then 🤞🏻 I have heard about aspirin so I’ll definitely give that a try too! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy journey!

glowingtwig · 16/11/2022 14:16

I'm so happy to read this @1stimeMum2b so excited for you Smile

Ah so pleased you've come this far already @1stimeMum2b I'm 19w now too and came off the progresterone around 14w when my supply of pessaries ran out as GP would only prescribe for 12w instead of 16w. I was so anxious about it! I weaned myself off them by dropping down to 1 a day for a week and a half then to zero, no more spotting and no more problems so far, next scan will tell I suppose!

@Cmay the pessaries kicked in pretty quick for me, hope they do for you too!
