Ferrous sulphate in pregnancy

Currently 26 weeks pregnant, had a blood test yesterday which showed that I’m anaemic. GP prescribed ferrous sulphate 200mg 3x a day, doesnt this seem like too much? I’ve read some not so good things about it so I’m scared but obviously I will take it because my iron is quite low. Anyone else been on ferrous sulphate 3x a day in pregnancy? Did it help? Did it have any side effects?

Constipation was a huge side effect for me! (Although it can have the opposite effect in others) I’d get some fybogel in, just in case. It’s safe to take daily in pregnancy but after a week or so of my body adjusting I didn’t need the fybogel any longer.
taking it with OJ increases absorption but, if it makes you feel nauseous, take with food rather than on an empty stomach.

@MumMumMumMumMum1 did you have to take it 3 times a day too?

Hi OP,

I've had the same - low ferritin, and was asked to take 200mg every other day. Had another test done 4 weeks after the first and my levels had increased nicely so I'm now fine. Still taking them every other day to keep levels steady, hopefully! You are supposed to take them with a source of vitamin C for best absorption, so I have them with a glass of orange juice.
Your prescription seems quite high but perhaps the GP thinks it's necessary? The midwife was who told me what doses to take, because my blood test was done at the hospital and my GP wasn't involved.

I have been prescribed the same tablets but advised to take only 1 a day, I'm not anaemic but my iron levels were very low and bordering on being anaemic. I haven't been constipated but going to the toilet has been uncomfortable, I take mines with orange juice to help !

I hope I don’t have any side effects! This is probably why my heart rate was so high lately, because I’m anaemic. I’m gonna take it with orange juice too 😌

I’m taking it twice a day. Makes me feel nauseous but it’s not as bad as the morning sickness was, so that’s something

@Peasplease12 you’re anaemic too? How many weeks are you?

My ferritin levels are low, not anemic and only have to take one a day.

I’m 32 weeks now, I’ve been taking the supplements since my 28 week appointment.
