1-10 Down syndrome screening results

Had the dreaded call today to say my chance of my baby having Down syndrome is 1-10. My NT came back normal but my Papp was low and my Hcg was high. Feel awful - can't think of anything else.

I had the NIPT test and I find my results in a week.

Has anybody had a similar result and everything turned out okay. I am 35 so I know that's a factor in the result. I would love to read some stories of peoples experiences.

Hopeful bump

Slightly higher odds here but I've just had an amniocentesis for the same reason.
Hope your result comes through soon to help put your mind at ease either way.
Try to look after yourself the next few days while you are waiting.

OP, you're me a year ago. 35yo, high HCG, low papp-a, 1/9 chance of Downs.

I'm currently feeding DD, 7mo, who does not have Downs.

That period of waiting remains the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I know how you feel- try not to despair (I know that's stupid advice, and would have wanted to kill anyone who gave it to me - sorry.). You have 9/10 chance of a baby without Downs. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Flowers

I had a 1 in 7 from the initial screening, with low papp-a, age and IVF all being factors. Had the NIPT which came back low risk, something like 1 in 10k from memory. Its hard not to worry, but try to remember that the initial screening is just a checklist of factors and the NIPT will give you a much clearer answer.

Fingers crossed for you x

Thank you for wording this so respectfully, it warmed my heart. So many posters phrase this "and my baby is perfect!" implying babies with Downs are faulty or imperfect 😟

italiangirl87 · 02/08/2022 20:15

@RodiganReed I agree with you in terms of wording. You just pray that you have a healthy baby and when the hospital call and say your results are very high risk you panic. It's not even been 12 hours yet and I have done so much research into stuff that my head is spinning!

@numberthirtytwowindsorgardens thanks for your words. It's reassuring but I know this week will drag to find out the results

Of course, it must be such a worrying time, wishing you and baby all the very best xx

@SweetPeaPods and @italiangirl87 , I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you both. Wishing you both good news and strength.

Just to update. I had my results today (3 day turn around!) and they are low risk!!! Thanks for the well wishes

Mine was 1:28 at 45 years old. I chose to have an amnio which came back clear.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 05/08/2022 18:45

All the best OP

out of interest @BluePeppermint why is IVF a factor for increased Downs risk?

BluePeppermint · 05/08/2022 19:04

@italiangirl87 That's great news, so pleased for you 😁

@Snoopsnoggysnog I'm not entirely sure. They seem to treat it as a risk factor for everything! The report showing my risk factors specifically said "adjusted for IVF". My clinic did warn me beforehand that some trusts do this so I may have increased consultant care, so I was somewhat prepared. Cant complain about the extra attention and monitoring though!
