I presume this is my sciatic (SP) nerve playing up. ITs really painful especially at night. How common is this? Is there anything my doctor/I can do about it? Is it just going to get worse?

HELP!!!!

Whereabouts in your leg?

Karen999 · 15/01/2008 14:51

Why dont you call your midwife/GP or call NHS Direct if you are worried? They may be able to put your mind at rest if it is troubling you.

ConnorTraceptive · 15/01/2008 14:55

I had this due to bad cramp, but I think you should get yourself checked out for DVT just to be on the safe side.

Sorry don't want to scare you, I get leg pain a lot at night and it is due to sciatic nerve but best to be safe and get yourself checked.

AnguaVonUberwald · 15/01/2008 14:55

Its in my knee/buttock - I am just presuming its nothing that is actually damaging the baby, just me!!!!!! Isn't this just something that happens in pregnancy

Connortraceptive, that hadn't even occured to me, would I be able to tell any difference?

When I spoke to the DR about my pain he asked if I had any swelling or red patches on the skin. Sometimes a raised temp/fever can be an indication.

If it's your knee/buttock then it's probably not dvt

AnguaVonUberwald · 15/01/2008 15:22

connortraceptive, I just got through to my midwife and she said it sounds very much like the baby is lying on the sciatic nerve and advised me to get an osteopath ASAP! Thanks for the advise though, as it would never have occured to me to check.

Has yours got better/worse during the pregnancy, has anything you have done helped?

It doesn't sound like a dvt to me, but when I had mine (also at 31 weeks), my midwife also thought it was nerves or something like that. it was only when my leg went blue that the dvt was diagnosed.

I would double check with a dr.

Having said that, usually pain from a dvt is in the calve or thigh or groin, as far as I know there isn't a relevant vein in the buttock or knee

EllieKat · 16/01/2008 12:48

Doesn't sound like DVT to me - location, no redness or swelling. I've had quite severe pains in my buttocks and along the outsides of whichever leg is on top when I lie on my side. MW said it was probably nerve pain, referred from the pelvis. Pillows between legs make it a little better sometimes. I did start rubbing lavender and arnica gels into my legs before sleeping and why this would help nerve pain, I don't know, but it's marginally better. As suggested by my GP s-i-l, who also had leg problems while pregnant. She also found a warm bath or shower, and leg massage before bed a help.

go to hospital. I had to go when I was prgnant as my ankle swelled up andthey thought it may be dvt. it wasnt but they were very reassuring, sadly the other ankle swelled up to match it shortly after wards! don't EVER presume its nothing when you are responsible not just for your life but that of your unborn child, if it was you would never forgive yourself (and I speak as someone who never goes to the doctor)

def osteo I suffered horrendouly with sciatica, osteo helped loads
yogic stretches are also very helpful

procrastinatingparent · 16/01/2008 13:10

still suffering with sciatica, four DCs on. It's worse when I lift or push. Would an osteopath really help?

kindersurprise · 16/01/2008 13:12

I had this kind of pain, it went from my back right down my leg.

I went to the hospital and they were next to useless.

A friend advised a chiropractor. He said this was common in late pregnancy, asked me to lie on my tummy (haha, 32weeks pregnant, like that was easy) and applied gentle pressure to my lower spine. Something popped back into place and the pain disappeared instantly.

I almost kissed the doc.

An osteopath should be able to do the same.

My antenatal yoga teacher last night showed us a move specifically designed to help ease this sort of pain - I've been suffering a little, but not as bad as yours by the soudns of it, and it really helped last night. I'd try to describe the move but it was a bit complicated - perhaps in addition to osteopath you could try to find an antenatal yoga class near you to help over the rest of your pregnancy (I'm 30 weeks and only done 2 sessions so it's not too late to start).

MissingMyHeels · 16/01/2008 13:26

I have had a very bad pain in my lower back/bum/shooting down my leg. Went to GP and he has prescribed me with some dyhydrocodeine and also crutches!!

He thinks it is a trapped sciatic nerve but his main concern was because my leg completely collapses upon standing so in the absence of me being able to rest for a week crutches and taking as much pressure off as possible are the next best thing. I'm 32 weeks pregnant so now looking a real idiot hobbling about on crutches. Definitely go to the GP

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 16/01/2008 13:34

I had this in my second pregnancy - I had three sessions with a cranial osteopath who specialised in pregnant women - she was a lovely lady based in Ealing - and was totally cured. I could not walk and the midwife unhelpfully told me that I would just have to stay immobilised until I gave birth so it was such a relief.

bubblagirl · 16/01/2008 13:40

i had this really bad i was bed rest for 2 weeks couldnt move only co codomal helped did see a physio but as all joints are suptle from being pregnant gave me some exercised to do at home but no physio could be given

London30s · 18/05/2020 15:51

Hi, I know this is 12 years late but I just wondered whether you might remember the name of the lady you saw in ealing? Was it Sholeh? I’m going through the same pain at the moment and live near there so I would like to find her if possible

Many thanks
