When did you have an early scan?

Desparate to have an early scan, I know you can do so from 6 weeks, but just wondering when everyone else did, and when you saw or heard heartbeat etc!

Hi! I paid for a early scan when I was between 6-7 week (I'm 9 now). It was so reassuring and I burst into tears when I saw the heartbeat. I definitely needed it for reassurance, and even got sent the videos from the scan afterwards. Smile

I had to have 2 weekly scans 6, 8, 10, 12 because of history of ectopic and miscarriages but I'd suggest booking around 8/9 weeks. At 6/7 weeks it's just a splodge with (hopefully)a heartbeat but by 8/9 weeks they're looking more like a baby and that's also when the risk of miscarriage dramatically reduces. The risk of going too early is if your dates are even slightly out it can cause more worry than it solves.

I had mine at 7w6 as I was so so anxious about it being too early and not seeing what we wanted. It was so lovely to see our little bean actually resemble a baby shape and to see the heart beat so I would try to leave it as long as you can but I know it's tough when you need that reassurance. Aim for 7 weeks if you can 🙏

I've had early scans over the years at 7, 8 or 9 weeks and it is reassuring and nice to see but I did also suffer a missed miscarriage where the baby had died at 10 weeks so I'm still reluctant to get excited about my current pregnancy (now 8.5 weeks) I wouldn't have wanted to wait til 12 weeks though so always glad I have one even of you can't relax quite yet.

I got one yesterday was 8+2 seen a little heart beat I burst out crying due to previous miscarriages

I had one at 8 weeks (looked like a blobby bean with a heartbeat flicker), one at 11 weeks (looked like a tiny baby!) and then the detailed diagnostic scan at 12.5 weeks. Then every month as is normal here.

I'm not in the UK, these were all free standard scans at the gynaecologist and specialist practice.

I had one with my first pregnancy at 5+3, shock pregnancy where the doctor just did it to show me I think. All it was possible to see at that point was the yolk sac and fetal pole, I don't remember the heartbeat. At 6+2 with my current pregnancy I had another confirmation scan and this one had a heartbeat, and if you really zoomed in on the image they gave, you could see a tiny outline of a baby (looked more like a gummy bear though!). Both of these were transvaginal with the wand thing inserted, just as a FYI.

10 weeks and I was quite shocked that he already looked like a baby sort of and I could see him flinging his little match stick arms around 😂

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/06/2022 18:00

7 weeks with both pregnancies and saw heartbeat both times.

RandomQuest · 06/06/2022 18:01

8 weeks to confirm pregnancy in correct location and then again at 11 weeks plus the blood draw for NIPT testing (not U.K.). Huge difference between the 2! 8 weeks was a flickering bean, 11 weeks was an actual baby.

I had my first at what I thought was 6+5 and I was dated at 7+2.

Second was at 9+5 my dates and dated at 10+1 there.

Congratulations!
I had a scan at 6 weeks to check for a heartbeat as we had fertility treatment. We were so emotional to see that little heartbeat!
We had another scan at 9 weeks though, and that was amazing!! We could see little nubs where the arms and legs would grow and the baby moving around. At that stage there is a significant reduction in the chances of miscarriage too.
If you can only get one early scan I would try to hold out until 9 weeks OP. The 12 week scan at hospital is (quite rightly) a very medical affair so I am glad we had the private 9 week scan for ourselves to get used to the pregnancy.

Furrbabymama87 · 06/06/2022 18:22

I had a scan at 6 weeks exactly with one of my pregnancies as I had had a bit of bleeding. It was an internal scan and showed the baby with a heartbeat.

ceebee21 · 06/06/2022 18:26

Thanks all, we already have a baby and I can't remember when we had the early scan; I had a missed miscarriage before that so I am still always anxious particularly before 12 weeks. I might hold out until 7 weeks, then maybe do another at around 10! X
