Please help me unblock my nose!

I am 10 weeks pregnant and have a hideous cold. My nose is completely blocked and nothing I've tried seems to be giving me any relief. I've tried steaming, nasal strips, honey and lemon, saline rinse etc. Normally I'd use a nasal spray like Vicks, or a Lemsip, but they're not recommended in pregnancy. I have barely slept for 3 nights as I cannot sleep whilst breathing out my mouth. Does anyone have any miracle cures?!

Hi OP,
I feel for you. I had pregnancy rhinitis from late in the third trimester, was the worst thing ever.

Unfortunately, standard nasal sprays are not recommended in pregnancy as they restrict blood flow in the placenta. I’d suggest doing some nasal massage, I also used to have an air humidifier running overnight and that provided some relief.

As it’s a cold, hopefully it will clear out by itself in a few days. If you’re still feeling awful, I’d suggest ringing your GP and they might prescribe Flucatisone. AFAIK this is the only nasal spray that can be used in pregnancy, albeit I didn’t find it too effective…

Hope you get better soon.

breathright nasal strips can help at night. I've had a blocked nose my whole pregnancy. definitely my most annoying symptom. 2 weeks until I'm hoping it should clear!

This might just be worth a try, no drugs or medications involved;

Try again with steam but add some menthol crystals - you can buy them in a little tub from the chemist. Go easy they are super strong - you need a tiny pinch in a whole baisin of hot water.

and sucking on a menthol sweet - like halls.

olbas oil.

Saline nasal sprays are awesome - you can find them in most chemists/supermarkets

Try Neilmed nasal irrigation …. It’s a bottle and salt sachets. Safe in pregnancy.
