8 week scan, baby measuring early - help please?

Hi all,

I am looking for some reassurance/guidance/success stories of people that have been in a similar position to me or know about this a lot more than me please?

On Thursday we went for a private early scan thinking I was roughly 7.5 weeks. She just did a stomach scan very quickly and said she could see a healthy gestational sac and yolk sac but couldn't see the foetal pole yet. She didn't do a transvaginal scan.

She asked if my dates could be slightly out and if I have longer cycles (which I do). But then measure the gestational sac at 6 weeks, which would be too early.

We are back in next week but are obviously extremely worried. She kept saying her measurements might not be 100% correct as she couldn't see the foetal pole to measure.

Has anyone experienced this before and had a good outcome? We have a transvaginal scan booked with the NHS next week, could this bring us back forward a little?

Any advice or reassurance would be great as this has really upset us.

Thanks xx

Your dates will be out, this is why these places offer a free re-scan because so many people get it wrong.

The irony of people going for a 'reassurance' scan and it does anything but reassure you.

Save your money and don't bother would be more reassuring!

I'm sorry but this is really unhelpful, there's no guarantee that OPs dates are out.

Sorry OP, it could really go either way unfortunately. Hoping you get positive news at the re scan Flowers

My EDD is 9 days out from my LMP date. I've always had long and irregular cycles. All seemed okay so far at my dating scan. Hope you get good news OP

Scans this early can be hit and miss, but at your gestation, it should certainly have been a transvaginal scan, rather than an abdominal. My local private scan company only do abdominal 10+ weeks.

Fingers crossed for your next scan.

This could go either way. Could be a blighted ovum. Could be dates are wrong. Your sure your dates are not wrong so it doesn’t look good especially since there was no feta pole or heart beat. If it had been you were a week earlier but with a baby and heart beat it can work out fine most of the time. I seen the same at my scan but I was exactly 6 weeks by my dates at the scan and she measured me at maybe 5+3 and told me to come back in 2 weeks. I went back and all was fine but I knew at 6weeks it would be hit or miss weather I seen anything or not.

Thanks everyone for your advice and guidance. I feel like I need to prepare for the worst as it's just not possible that I'm 6 weeks. But then I am also hoping for a miracle and that the transvaginal scan on Tuesday will be able to find something and give us more hope. Just the waiting game has been horrendous!
