Pregnancy... the ultimate antihistamine?

Just wondering if anyone else is completely free of hayfever this year while pregnant? I'm normally on antihistamines from March through August and have been for over 20 years, it's always affected me really badly to the point of being close to being hospitalised. But so far this year, despite it normally starting up early April, I'm completely free of symptoms so far, even without taking my normal tablets. Not out of the woods yet lol, but it's so nice to be able to actually enjoy the smell of spring!

I thought this too! Usually I’m puffy eyed and have an awful nose, but so far nothing! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

You're not on anti sickness medication by any chance? Some of them are strong antihistamines (e.g. Cyclizine I believe)

Basilthymerosemary · 06/05/2022 22:15

Yes this happened to me. All my allergies to certain fruit and pollen disappeared. Only reappeared after I stopped breastfeeding. Enjoy it!!!

BluegrassBlues · 06/05/2022 22:20

Yep, I've just stopped breastfeeding and although my hayfever had started up a bit, it's now hit me full force Envy

Wildlynx · 06/05/2022 22:21

I had the opposite 😢. No major allergies until my summer baby was born a few years ago and then massive reaction. It's relatively mild if I keep up the antihistamines but another potential side effect of pregnancy no one really knows about! Hope some of you manage tostay hay fever free forever!

APurpleSquirrel · 06/05/2022 22:21

I found this too - was on prescription antihistamines pre-pregnancy, but was fine during & after. I'd say mine still hasn't returned to the same levels & youngest is nearly 4.

toomuchlaundry · 06/05/2022 22:22

I had the same when pregnant. It did come back unfortunately

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 06/05/2022 22:23

Not me, but kind of me, as this happened to my mum when she was pregnant with me. She had terrible hay fever her whole life, from childhood, until the spring and summer she was pregnant with me aged 33. She had to have special sprays for up her nose and tablets prescribed by a specialist. 42 years later, it’s never returned. She says if she had known she would have gotten pregnant earlier!

My asthma and hayfever completely disappeared when I was pregnant. Both came back after about 12 months after I gave birth

Sunnyshoeshine · 06/05/2022 22:30

Yes this happened to me last year! So i read that hayfever is an overreaction of your immune system to the pollen, and when you are pregnant, your immune system is suppressed to prevent your body rejecting the baby. So makes sense that hayfever would be not as bad as your immune system isn't reacting to the allergen.

I finished breastfeeding amount a month ago and today my face feels like it has exploded 🤧🤧🤧

fpurplea · 06/05/2022 22:43

No other drugs at all. I figured it was probably something to do with the immunosuppressant nature of pregnancy, but am still stunned at how completely it's just not started up at all! Got a massive facefull of pollen-y smell earlier that would have normally set me off terribly, but nope! I'm having a baby every year! 😂

A friend had awful hay fever that disappeared while pregnant with her first (decades ago) and it has never come back!

Weathergirl1 · 06/05/2022 22:46

Yes, the placenta produces an enzyme called DAO which degrades histamine, so it can have an effect on histamine allergies. I didn't really suffer from hayfever and my urticaria didn't flare much either when I was pregnant with my first.

justanotherlaura · 07/05/2022 07:50

Mine hasn't disappeared, it's started a month early! I really didn't wanted to try and get through the summer without antihistamines but after a week of getting 2 hours sleep a night from symptoms I gave in and got loratadine from the doctor
