IVF babies: are they really born early?

Hi all,

I've read that IVF babies tend to come early, and was wondering if there was any truth in that? I'm currently 32 weeks on the nose with my baby girl, had a fresh egg transfer at 5 days. I don't want her to be too early but equally a bit panicked at going over the due date!

Thank you

I was induced on my due date due to being IVF.
This varies between trusts.

But no signs of him at all before 40 weeks

Not always - my DD arrived on her due date (fresh ICSI cycle, 5 day transfer). Try not to worry and enjoy these last few weeks before your baby arrives :)

When you read it, was there a source cited to demonstrate how they know? If not, I'd take it with a pinch of salt and do my own research.

My ICSI baby was only a few days early because I had an ELCS.

My experience was that once you are in the "normal" antenatal system, lots of the staff are pretty clueless about IVF babies (kept asking me for date of last period, for example, even when I explained the process).

Peterpiperpickedwrongagain · 06/05/2022 15:11

My ICSI baby was 2 weeks early.

I imagine the statistic is skewed by the fact that a higher proportion of IVF babies are multiples? Twins, triplets tend to come early as a rule.

somethingfunny · 06/05/2022 15:22

My two IVF babies were born one week late and 10 days late

DoctorBambino · 06/05/2022 15:23

My little ivf miracle arrived at 37+1. I has very low papp a which was probably the reason.

iggybop · 06/05/2022 15:30

Mine was born 2 days after due date

Was never given this fact

Dove88 · 06/05/2022 16:16

My icsi baby was born at 41+2 and I had to be induced. Think she would’ve been well beyond this if I had waited for nature to take its course.
Why are you nervous about being overdue?

Festivalpartygirl · 06/05/2022 16:54

Mine was born 4 days early.

Frenchie86 · 06/05/2022 19:33

Thanks everyone. There was research cited in the articles but like one of you pointed out, it might be skewed due to multiples births.

Mine had to be evicted at 41+2, was showing v little sign of going anywhere. So I think not in my experience! Maybe the stats show this due to a lot more planned births?

willithappen · 06/05/2022 20:00

My dd was born at 39+4 after a 3 day labour.

My IVF baby was the full 2 weeks overdue. They induced me 12 days after my due date, I think. I had 3 failed inductions, plenty of cramping but no contractions, no dilation and then finally a non-emergency c section.
I always joke that he didn’t know how to get in and didn’t know how how to get out but the pregnancy itself was absolutely fine thankfully. Good luck!

Ladyglittersparkleseriously · 06/05/2022 20:07

Mine was 10 days late, bless her, she didn't want to come out! ICSI baby, frozen cycle. She's the best! Good luck! X

Frenchie86 · 06/05/2022 22:53

Thanks everyone x
