Short cervix success stories?

Rachae · 23/02/2022 15:50

Hey everyone,

Any success stories of a short cervix from 18 weeks and baby was ok?

I had my cervix measured at 16 weeks and it was 3.1cm. I'm now 18 weeks and it's measured 2.3cm.

I've had 4 miscarriages (first trimester) and they have offered me a cerclage tomorrow or monitor next week with progesterone. The cerclage carries a 1% miscarriage risk, whereas they don't know how much it will shorten further.

Doctor has said it's my decision but need to weigh up the risks. If it was her, she'd wait a week. They've also prescribed me bed rest.

Appreciate any stories, thoughts or opinions! Xxx

I'm sorry don't have any advice, but I was just wonderimg if cervix measuring was standard? I've had part of my cervix removed so it's probably going to be an issue, will they measure it as standard? I only got 10 weeks into my pregnancy last time so don't have much comparison Xx

I can say what my gp said to me - if you have the stitch and it goes wrong you can say you tried. If you don’t have the stitch and it goes wrong you are left with what if? Can you live with what if? It’s a question only you can answer.

I’ve had 7 pregnancies - 4 losses, 1 ectopic and 2 pre term. I have a short cervix and my uterus lining is uneven (tbh I’ve cast aside the specifics as I’m now infertile due to ectopic). I had the stitch with my second at 17 weeks. I also had pessaries daily. No swimming. No walking far. No travelling far. No heavy lifting. No sex. I adhered and got to 31 weeks just. The other I went into Labour at 29 weeks.

@Tigerlily7590 thanks for your response. As far as I understand it, they only do so if you're classed as high risk. I'd had a loop biopsy previously but they said that didn't count as high risk enough to do the scan. I battled with them given the miscarriage history and they eventually gave in... I'm so glad I did given what Im dealing with now! My advice is push for it regardless or pay private xx

Hello, I had my cervix partially removed as of abnormal cells CIN3 years ago.
When I was later pregnant with my daughter, my cervix shortened to 2.5 cm by week 20 according to the scan.

I was panicking and enquired about a stitch put in, however they refused.
I went for a private scan and I was told that my cervix measures correctly of apprx 4cm as it should.
My daughter was born on time.

Beemo12 · 23/02/2022 18:14

I was diagnosed with a short cervix (2,3) cm at 26 weeks which shortened to 1.5 for a while and then back to 2.5

I was on daily progesterone and bed rest as I was too late for the cerclage and made it to 39 weeks. My cervix dialated to 5cm with zero contractions.

I am now 4 weeks pregnant and definitely getting a cerclage if offered.

@Rachae ah one was loop biopsy and multiple losses too so that’s good to know that I need to push for it! Good luck with it all Xx

Join the Facebook group Incompetent Cervix UK - Pregnancy Related. You’ll find lots of women in a similar position.
There are some good sets of stats out there on cerclage outcomes. I’m sorry I dont have anything to hand at the moment.

I had a length of 19.4mm at 16 weeks. I tried progesterone for a week but it shortened further and funnelled so I had an emergency stitch at 17 weeks. I’d previously had a loop biopsy.

I’m currently feeding my 11 week old who was born at 38 weeks. It was a super nerve wracking pregnancy but we got there.

Bear in mind there are different types of stitch and there’s also the Arabin Pessary. Different hospitals also have different expertise. A lot of women with previous losses go to Leeds where they have a special high stitch they can do. I had a low (Macdonald) stitch.

I lost my daughter at 17 weeks (which we now know was cervical incompetence). In my second pregnancy I had scans which showed a shortening from 2.5 to 1.7 cm (despite progesterone) - it lasted to term and I had my little girl in January. My cervix lengthened to 3.7 after the stitch. Totally your choice but i'd have another cerclage without hesitation. I rested for 2 weeks after it was in but was normally active for the rest of my pregnancy. Maybe see if you can check the success rate of the consultant at your hospital? From what I've read there are different types of stitch some of which carry a greater success rate... Wishing you the very best. V. Happy to answer any questions; I really don't think I'd have my baby without the cerclage!

Lollypop223 · 23/02/2022 19:38

** sorry, not clear in the post above. I had the cerclage put in the day after the scan showed shortening at 20 weeks

annlee3817 · 23/02/2022 19:43

I was too late for the cerclage, so had progesterone three times a day from 23 weeks, bed rest from 31 weeks to 36 weeks, I did start to dilate when I stopped the progesterone, but DD hung in until 40+5, pregnant again and will be monitored from earlier on this time, I'd opt for the stitch if offered it.

Hi, I also had loop procedure last year due remove CNI 3 and 2 cells. The doctor didn't tell me how much they removed and it's always annoyed me. They said they removed as little as they could to reduce risk to pregnancy. My follow up smear came back fine I guess as I didn't hear otherwise.
I mentioned to my MW I had this procedure as I too was worried about a small cervix, but she didn't seem to be concerned - I plan to see my MW in over a week, should I raise this again?

NewNormalLife · 23/02/2022 20:31

I know someone who's cervix was just 0.5cm around 24 weeks and she made it to 32 weeks before the baby was born by using pessaries and resting. I think she'd have gone for the stitch if she'd found out early enough though

Thanks so much for all of the additional comments 😊 really appreciated x

@Tigerlily7590 have you had your booking appointment? They ask you then if you've had any obstetrics procedures or concerns before. Having LLETZ/LEEP or eg endometriosis would automatically mean you'd get referred for an obstetrics appointment. At least in most trusts from what I gather!

Hello, I just found your post and I’m wondering how your doing? I am 17 weeks today found out 3 days ago I have a Brit cervix (2.2cm) extremely worried.
thank you x

Rachae · 21/08/2022 08:35

Hey @swillis19 I'm happy to report that I gave birth July 13th and have a lovely little boy ☺️. I had cervix scans at 17 weeks and it decreased In size until 19 weeks where it went down to 2cm. I was given the choice on the day to wait and see with progesterone or have a stitch. I had a stitch put in the same day and took progrestrone for the remainder of my pregnancy. I would recommend asking for the stitch xxx

I went through this 10 years ago with my daughter. My cervix measured 2cm at 22 weeks.
I was living abroad at the time and was offered the stitch but given 2 days to go home and think about it as my doctor said at this length of shortening it was quite risky and could actually pop the waters by mistake.
I researched and said my concerns and my doctor found a rubber ring used in patients with bladder issues - she put this around the cervix which held it tightly closed and I did bedrest from 22 weeks till 37 and then had it removed and she was born healthy one week later
