Short femur length 34 weeks

Hi all,
I had a scan yesterday morning at 33 weeks 5 days, and everything was fine with our little boy (head, tummy, heart, umbilical cord etc) except his femur length was measuring about 5 weeks behind, putting it in the 1st centile. We've been referred for a more detailed scan with the consultant on Friday, but I feel absolutely sick with worry. I wondered whether anyone had been through something similar, and would be willing to share what happened for them?

Just wanted to update this for anyone with this worry in the future - my little boy was both perfectly healthy and is now 2 and a half months old and growing like a champ. His height is currently 50th centile, and as far as we can tell there has never been anything disproportionate about his legs!

So pleased to hear this and thank you for the update.

My little boy is currently 33 weeks and everything is else above 50th percentile with his femurs on the 5th which does worry me at this stage in pregnancy… xxx

@CaBro Thank you so much for sharing your story! It’s great to hear your story ended well.🙏 I am in a similar situation now and going crazy. Would you be able to share exact measurements that you had during your scans after week 32? Currently I am 38 weeks and head measuring >2 weeks ahead and femur measuring below 1%, around 33-34 weeks (so 5-6 weeks in between). My measurements at 37 weeks:
FL: 6,48
BPD: 9,48
HC: 33,92
AC: 34,5

Hi @Eleina , I'm really sorry I never replied to this. I don't think I actually have the exact measurements any more, although I think I put the centiles somewhere in this thread. I really hope that all was well with your LO and that you're doing ok x

Just wanted to thank you all for the comments on this thread. My little man has been measuring <3rd centile since 20wk scan so lots of growth monitoring. At our last one on Friday he was estimated 3lbs3oz at 31+4 and his head and abdomen have caught up a chunk but femur still small. It's reassuring to see all these positive outcomes. Fingers crossed we end up similar! 🙏🏼💕

Aw, glad it's helped @SnookyPook, it's really natural to feel anxious even though you know there's nothing you can do. Hope all continues well for the rest of your pregnancy x

I'm so glad I came across this! It gives me a little bit of hope.I am currently 16 weeks & we have been told that baby's limbs are measuring 3-4 weeks behind & chest is small. We have been told that baby would either have dwarfism or wouldn't survive after birth because of her chest being small & apparently her bones wont grow anymore. But my argument is that I'm only 16 weeks so surely she still does have time to grow right? The consultant I saw today said baby's limbs were that of a 12 week old fetus but my first scan was at 13+6 & my regular consultant never mentioned anything about shoer bones. I'm on the small side myself at 5ft 2in, petite. I weighed 5lb 14 at birth and my sons was all weighing in the 6lbs at birth. I guess I'm just trying to find some hope my daughter will be okay & that the consultant was wrong..

Update from me: healthy but small baby boy born via c-section at 37wks. Born on the 2nd centile (5lbs7oz). He'll be a month old on Monday. He's still tracking a small centile but growing nicely - reached birth-weight at 2 weeks after initial drop of just over 10% and treatment for jaundice. Just moving into newborn clothes from tiny baby ones.

@KentWoman34 that certainly seems early to be making definitive diagnoses etc. Surely makes sense to see how things are looking at 20wk scan? Was the 16wk one with a private place? We were monitored continuously from 20wks, warned he might need to be delivered around 33/34wks, had an amnio to check possible genetic causes/conditions at 35wks... Eventually delivered safely at 37wks on the dot and no sign of anything other than being a small baby. Best of luck to you 💕
