Spotting 6 weeks pregnant- confusing advice from MW

Hi,

I’ve had some pink/ red/ brown spotting in my cervical mucous for the last 2 days only when I wipe. Feeling of fullness/ the odd twinge but no pain. I’ve had some looser stools too so not sure if that’s associated. Texted my midwife who said I might need to get a urine test and to call A and E. Can’t get hold of her for some more information (eg how to get a urine test). I’ve generally not had many pregnancy symptoms. It’s my first so not sure what my normal is. Getting very mixed messages online about whether to be worried or not and at a loss around what to do next. All the while feeling very anxious. Any advice/ thoughts would be really helpful! Thanks Smile

Can you contact your local early pregnancy unit and ask for advice?

GeorgiaMcGraw · 09/02/2022 16:39

Did she say why she wants you to have a urine test (eg to measure hcg or to see if you have an infection)? I had spotting at 6-8ish weeks (I'm now 32 weeks) and phoned the gp who someone from the midwifery team to talk to me. They told me just to relax and monitor for changes. After a week it got heavier so they did an ultrasound and things were fine. Loads of reasons for spotting. If it becomes enough to fill a sanitary pad in 1-2 hours, then it's more likely a mc. Hopefully it's just a popped blood vessel/irritation/implantation bleeding.

Thanks so much for your advice. She’s called me back and just told me to monitor 👍🏻 Bit scary/ unnerving but hopefully it’s a one off and goes away.

@GeorgiaMcGraw hey, how long did your spotting last for? I’m on day 4 now and it’s got a bit heavier today Sad still pink but more of it. Nurse at EPU told me to wait 7 days and to call if it continues. I have a private scan on Tuesday but I feel miserable. Nowhere at the hospital will be open for scans at the weekend and just imagining the worst now. Any positive stories would be great. Was hoping it was going to be a day of a thing but worried it’s going on too long now.

Hi, I'm sorry you're going through this. The waiting is the worst. I've had spotting which turned into nothing, but I also had spotting which got worse and I miscarried. There is no way of distinguishing between them until it either stops or doesn't.

If I can give you some advice I would not go to a private scan. Most of them are completely useless and do not have any medical training. I know waiting is awful, but try to wait until Monday and get in touch with EPU. There you can have a reliable scan. Sending strength

Thank-you for your reply. I will call the hospital on Monday and try and keep sane this weekend! I booked the private scan a while back and will reconsider going now.

Have you been checking line progression?? Iv had many chemicals and I am obsessed with mine progression now and when I had my pregnancy that made it to 7 weeks then I lost it it never developed and I spotted for ages before the bleeding but my lines never ever got dark where as with my pregnancies that have been ok my lines got dark quickly and symptoms have been full on from 5 weeks, vomiting, insomnia, very painful breasts,. So spotting and no symptoms doesn’t sound too great but as you say it’s your first and some people don’t get symptoms where as I know that I do; so when I didn’t I knew something wasn’t right. Can you bring your private scan forwards?

Totoro1234 · 11/02/2022 19:30

Hi, I have had some clear positive results and clear blue digitals progressed to 2-3 weeks. I stopped taking tests after that as was advised to and also was becoming obsessed with line progression. Want to stay away from tests as not sure I will be able to trust the results 100% anyway and also with it being the weekend tomorrow I can’t go anywhere for a scan in the meantime. Preparing myself for all eventualities and just feeling fed up with the unknown at this point! Thank-you for the advice 🙂

How far along are you? I second staying away from tests I got obsessed before when I had a mmc and it made me ill with worry, I know it really helps some women but for me it just fed the anxiety!

Totoro1234 · 11/02/2022 20:29

I have irregular periods so can’t be sure but I’m around 6/7 weeks. Just wish I had a crystal ball to know what happens next! So many mixed stories online about spitting. I wouldn’t be as worried but it’s been 4 days and it doesn’t seem to be getting lighter. As I said though, only when wipe and not every time I use the loo. Thanks for replying, really appreciate any advice!

@Totoro1234

Hi OP,
In the same situation here. Are you any further forward?

Sorry I missed this. My first bout of spotting took around 2 weeks. Got heavier for the first week or so. Mix of pink, brown, red. Then had a couple of days around week 12. All turned out ok, likely implantation bleeding the first time, or possibly just hypervascularisation in the cervix both times. I hope you're doing well x
