After a gender scan it was found my unborn son has a partial cleft lip . I’m just so heartbroken . I have been told palete looks unaffected but I have so many questions … firstly has anybody’s baby had a similar cleft size ? Doctor advised it’s small but I would like more of a visual idea.. also I feel online it is very much a sure thing pallete involvement but doctor said if it’s one sided and partial it’s less likely ? Does anyone have any experience of this ? I’m just so scared . It’s my second baby .

Have you had any tests to confirm cleft lip isn't a result of genetic issue?

Hi ,
I had a more detailed scan with fetal medicine and they are confident it is isolated incident . I see them again at 20 weeks . Everything apart from the lip looked completely normal . Just worried about the palate and obviously the shock of diagnosis

If you haven’t already been in touch with them, get in touch with CLAPA who are the specialist support organisation. You will get great information, advice and support

@SussexmidwifeThey have been in touch thanks . I’m just so conflicted . I came away from scan positive palate probably wants involved but I feel online it seems pretty sure it will be . I’m worried .

I’m sure this is a shock. My nephew had a cleft lip and palate which was not detected on the scans so as a huge shock when he was born. He’s 6 now and you would never know.

How is he now ? Does he have any health issues ? Thankyou for replying x

My BIL had severe double hair lip and cleft palette. No other issues.
We were aware it could be genetic but it wasn’t passed in our case but there is great support out there and should hopefully be a really minimal issue for him.
Try not to overly worry as, as far as these things go this should be easily sorted and surgery is so amazing you wouldn’t even know.
As pp said contact support services as you may initially need feeding support depending on situation

@Flackattack Thankyou for this . It’s just so scary the unknown x

Joaquin Phoenix has / had a cleft lip. It's barely visible. I don't know if this is the same thing and severity as your son has but surgeons can do amazing things and your son's sounds small.

I'm sure it's a shock to hear the diagnosis but try to keep a positive open mind till you have the follow up consultations and can learn more about your son's particular circumstances.
