Recurrent UTIs

Has anyone had any joy with being put on antibiotics prophylaxis (long term preventative antibiotics) for a recurrent UTI when pregnant? I'm on my fourth course of antibiotics in a month, it keeps clearing up and then within a couple of days it comes back. I've been referred to an obstetrician who I am seeing next Tuesday as my GP won't make the decision to put me on it. NICE guidelines state it should be considered but to be aware of certain risks such as severity of symptoms, previous antibiotic use etc. I just wondered if I'm likely to have to fight for it or if it's something I'm likely to get pretty easy? I've had 6 days off work in total due to this issue and still have another 9 weeks at work before I finish, I can't carry on the way I have been. I've been on nitrofurantoin which has been clearing the infection, NICE guidelines state avoid at term but I presume if I'm still suffering at term they would induce rather than allow me to keep taking it. I can't take amoxicillin due to a penicillin allergy. I'm 25 weeks pregnant.

@Lorw he said the benefits outweighed the risks so he wanted to at least try me on them knowing if I did have a reaction it wouldn't be life threatening. Looking at NICE guidelines though I agree as although they recommend 4 different types for long term 2 of them I couldn't take and the 3rd I couldn't take at term. I wasn't sick last night, I think the trick is to take it an hour or so after I've eaten so fingers crossed I'm okay now.

@Lorw how are you coping with having them coming back for so long? I've only had this issue for 6 weeks, I don't know how I would be coping if I had had it for as long as you! Are you also on long term antibiotics or do they just keep prescribing as and when it flares up?

Hi OP, how did this end up going? Currently 22 weeks pregnant and experiencing recurrent UTIs and I’m fed up with it.

I'm 23+2 and I've had two so far/been on antibiotics twice 😭 before the pregnancy I hadn't had a UTI for a year!

It’s an absolute pain, sick of it :( I’m about to go on my 5th or 6th course of antibiotics and finally been referred to gynae to probably put me on a constant low dose of antibiotics for the rest of the pregnancy. Just fed up with it

So when I went for the follow up appointment 2 weeks later I saw a different doctor who told me she wouldn't prescribe me anymore. I'd been given a 4 week course of the cefalexin and she told me once I'd finished that course that was it. I asked what happened if it came back do I ring the hospital again and she said no I needed to go back to my GP and start the process all over again. I thought she was an absolute cow! Anyway I finished the course, dropped another sample in at the doctors and it had finally cleared and I've had nothing since. It did work out I was on antibiotics for something like 10 weeks, it was ridiculous.
