Nothing found on 10 week scan but test still positive

My friend has had a private scan at 10 weeks and they couldn't find a foetus (abdominal and vaginal). She is sure of dates of last period and tested positive 4 weeks later. They suggested if she does another test and it's still positive, (which is it), that it could be ectopic and she needs to ring the GP tomorrow. She's had no symptoms, no bleeding and no pain. Anyone had a similar situation and had a positive outcome where they just couldn't find the foetus? I know it's highly unlikely when she is supposed to be 10 weeks but I'm just really sad for her 😔.

Missed miscarriage is fairly common , she should do what they say because I ectopic can be very dangerous !

Yes she is going to ring the GP. If it is a miscarriage she's just confused how she can get to 10 weeks with no bleeding and the test still be positive

The hcg levels stay high enough to show positive foe a while I believe

Was there a sac?

I had a mmc which was called a blighted ovum. Had positive pregnancy tests but only an empty sac on the scan.

No there was nothing found at all, that's why they thought maybe ectopic. Surely a missed miscarriage would show some product remaining that they would see if she's still testing positive at 10 weeks? It doesn't sound good anyway.

I’m sorry for your friend. Slightly different but I had a mmc and got to my 12 week scan with no bleeding or any other signs, I’d even started getting a bump that week. They were able to tell on the scan that the baby had stopped growing a few week earlier though. It must be a horribly confusing shock for her, hope the GP and EPU can help.

Hairyfriend · 10/10/2021 20:53

I would have expected the private clinic to refer her directly to the EPU! Seems a faff to contact the GP, try to get an appointment, then to be referred to EPU anyways!

The body can absorb an early foetus, or it could be a blighted ovum where the foetus didn't form at all. Did they see anything at all on the scan? Not unheard of to have a scan somewhere else and its then very obvious. Wishing her all the best.

@Allthesefolks sorry about your miscarriage 😔. She is upset, they've been trying for over a year and a half and this was her first positive test.

@Hairyfriend maybe because it was a Sunday afternoon it wasn't possible to refer? Or just too much faff for them 🙄. No there was nothing seen on the scan which is why they thought ectopic.

Update - hospital found a sac but it's measuring at 6 weeks and they are expecting a missed miscarriage unfortunately. Just have to wait and see now

So sorry to hear that OP. Thinking of you.

I was thinking along the same lines.
