Maternity coat quandary

Hi all I was wondering if there’s any advice in maternity coats? Am due in Jan so need to weather the cold weather - especially as I’ll be outdoors a lot. I also don’t want to spend a lot as I won’t be using it for long.

I like the idea of coats that have the extra panel so can used, once baby is here, round a carrier.

I started off as a size 10 and have only put on a stone so far. I bought a size 12 coat from ASDA that is great except, without the panel, it’s already very snug on my six month belly. And my bump very small at the moment - as everyone seems to joy in telling me. I’m expecting to grow quite a bit in the next while. One of the comments on the coat has agreed it’s snug and they got a bigger size. Do you think the panel will see me through the third trimester? If I have another baby I hear I will likely be bigger and would rather not have to rebuy a coat.

There’s loads on eBay but they are 8-10 or 12-14, often with no extra panel, so not sure which to go for and returns is usually tricky on these sites, plus I will have to pay postage. I’m not going into any shops because of covid so have to buy online.

I also have size 14 coats from my larger days. Wondering if these could possibly see me through.

Any thoughts, advice or links to solves-it-all affordable coats would be gratefully received.

I just used a normal waterproof from gooutdoors a size up for my first pregnancy (baby was due march) and then bought a mamalilla baby wearing coat that is fab for baby wearing and being used as a maternity coat this time round (baby due November and I'm definitely much bigger, the oversized waterproof is too small this time round 🙈). Was an expensive outlay initially but definitely been worth it.

I was a size 12 pre-pregnancy. Bought a size 18 parka from Sainsbury's for £20 and it saw me through two pregnancies (December and February babies so biggest when it was coldest!).

It had a drawstring that pulled in nicely over my bump so looked reasonably neat. Probably could have managed in a 16 but the 18 was a really comfy fit.

I had an a line coat with belt, given to me, never used afterwards tho

I didn’t want to pay £100 odd for a coat - die in December. I have a size 14 jacket that still does up but it’s not that warm so I went to primark and bought a £30 size 18 coat
I look like I’m out of the fucking handmaids tale - it looks like a cloak. My husband was like ‘where will you be wearing that?’
Wish I’d been less right and bought a proper coat now 🙈😂

Been less tight even. Terrible typing!

Ebay is probably a good shout. Managed to get a seraphine 3in1 baby wearing coat on there for £65. Reckon I'll be able to sell it on for similar too when I'm done as they seem to hold their value well.

I had a coat from Jojo Amman that was more of a poncho style that you wrapped round and tied up. I got it in the sale so was only £15 but was fab and could use over babies when they were born and even use it still as a non pregnancy coat. Not sure if they still do them but just seen one on eBay

AnonymousXXIX · 10/10/2021 21:35

I just borrowed a humongous coat off my father in law for a couple months.

NichyNoo · 10/10/2021 21:38

I was a size 10 when I got pregnant with my December baby and I just bought a size 14 Primark coat for about £25.

Littlemiss41andfabulous · 10/10/2021 22:53

I've hired a nice maternity coat with panels once baby born from www.belle sandbabes.co.uk for £40. Due January so should do me until the summer. Just waiting to arrive now.

thebookworm1 · 11/10/2021 06:07

I am pretty much at term now and can still zip up my normal winter coat with a fluffy jumper underneath. I'm not particularly thin either - coats tend to not be form fitting so there's enough space! I would think the size 14 coats you have will be fine.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 11/10/2021 10:23

Asda do a winter maternity coat (with panel) - I bought one a while back, it was about £40.

Aquarius93 · 11/10/2021 14:14

I’ve got this one from Asda as it was a much more reasonable price than some others especially with the panels direct.asda.com/george/women/maternity-clothes/maternity-coats/maternity-black-faux-fur-trim-hooded-2-in-1-parka/GEM839519,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M19G1C12

If you’re interested in second hand, I really recommend Vinted and have bought a lot of maternity clothes from there!

Peachi82 · 11/10/2021 14:41

That's the one I was looking at as well.
A shame it's not rainproof :-(
But maybe if I always take an umbrella I might be fine?
