TTC when been in job less than six months?

Hi all. I shall first preface this by saying I am not currently pregnant or TTC.

I would LOVE to have another baby fairly soon, as would my partner (we already have a DD who is nearly 3). However, I only started my current job in mid May, so have only been there for just under 5 months. I love it and am planning to stay here for the foreseeable, but am worried how they would react if I got pregnant soon. I have already passed my probation, been getting glowing feedback from my manager, and would be entitled to SMP, so really the only thing holding me back is the fact I haven't been there that long!

Would you TTC in my situation or leave it a few more months? I am 26 and my partner is 30.

Thank you 😊

It’s a completely subjective decision. Personally I would wait for 1 year until I get the company sick pay! Or whatever policy you have in place if they offer company sick pay.

Personally I’d wait until you’re eligible for company maternity pay as well as SMP, can you check when you’ll be entitled to that?

Thanks both, unfortunately my company only offers SMP. That isn't too much of an issue though as we'd still be okay financially on SMP.

As long as you’re ok financially with SMP I would start trying. Firstly you never know how long it may take & if it happens straight away realistically by the time you tell them you would’ve been there almost a year & by the time you go on Mat leave you would’ve been there a year and a half which is more then enough time to be bedded in! I’ve known people who have changed jobs while pregnant, gotten pregnant during the interview process etc etc even if it has been a problem the employer has never made it uncomfortable or let on! Only thing I would find out is when their enhanced mat pay kicks in, you wouldn’t want to get pregnant & just miss it when you could’ve just held on a month or two so I would check. I say go for it and good luck :)

I'm in this situation now! Started job in May and now 8 weeks pregnant. Not ideal and I'm not looking forward to telling them! But qualify for enhanced SMP from work already so in my head it's ok!!

If there's no enhanced maternity package that you need to wait to be eligible for then I see no reason to wait.

I wouldn't wait just from fear of 'how work will react', your reproductive choices shouldn't be determined by your manager or whatever! If there's no financial incentive to wait longer as you've said there's no enhanced mat package then go for it. Could take awhile anyway.
