No photos 12 week scan - UCLH

I had my 12 week scan today but I didn't receive a scan photo nor did I get one with the results (had hope that perhaps it was all digital now instead)

They did have trouble getting the measurements during my scan so maybe they were stressed out and it was missed but I don't recall them taking any good photos anyway - just super close up ones to check measurements etc

Is this the norm? Should I have asked for it before the scan started?

It didn't occur to me to ask during the scan and it was a bit of a rush to get me out the room straight after perhaps because it was a junior doctor who was being supervised so they wanted to discuss the appointment amongst themselves afterwards

I'm a little bit bummed because I wanted to guess the babys sex etc. but its healthy so I guess that's all that matters

I have emailed the hospital but no reply as of yet!
Has anyone else been in the same position?

We didn't get one when we had our scans at King's. I used to just take a photo of the screen on my phone. It is a bit of a shame as it's nice to have a print out to stick on the fridge!

It's a medical procedure not a photo opportunity.

It's nice if they offer you a photo, but that is not the purpose of the scan.

Elsbeth1 · 22/09/2021 20:49

@babouchette oh that sucks did you ask if they did photos?

Lesson learnt for me going to ask at my 20 week scan and if they don't I'll take pictures on my phone! I was just a bit shocked at how rushed it was I guess because I had a 8 week private scan and it was so calm at that appointment and there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and take photos and videos and whatnot Blush

I've just asked my cousin who had her baby at the same hospital just last month and she said she got 12 week and 20 week photos just given to her so they must just have forgotten!

Why not Have a private scan in a week or two? That way you'll have some nice piccies and you might find out babies sex

I did get pictures at my 12 and 20 week scans. However have not been given any at the rest of my growth scans.

Fairywings86 · 22/09/2021 20:54

@nothankssheher I think she already knows this, she was just asking if it's the norm or not to get a photo, calm down ffs! She was asking for advice not a lecture 🙄

It's worth asking op, I didn't realise you didn't get a picture with your nhs scan tbh, I thought it was normal for them to give you one and you buy the extras, if not could you go for a private scan and get a good few piccys for you to keep instead? x

Yeah that's a good idea thanks everyone! Another private scan would break up the crazy long 2 month wait until the 20 week scan too 😃

@Elsbeth1That’s really poor of them! Sorry to hear that. The 12 week scan is meant to be a special experience as well as a serious medical thing obviously but for most women it’s the first time they’ll see their babies on screen.

If you did your bloods at the same time you should get your results back within two weeks or a few days depending on the outcome. If you’re worried, call your midwife or the screening midwife at the hospital.

Our twelve week scan was a bit of a shit show so we booked a private one 10 days later. Sonographer was much more patient and went through everything with us carefully explaining what we could see on screen. It was £70 well spent imo but appreciate it’s not ideal for everyone to pay more.

I was sort of hesitant to get a private scan because the clinics always feel a bit tacky, trying to sell you those 4D pictures in a special ‘I love my Grandma’ frame and the display ones look like photo of a melted candle, but I had to get one after a scare as there were no scans available at my hospital and I loved it Grin it was such a different experience and they really make it about you bonding with your little melted candle baby. Well worth £40!

I was treated at UCLH last year and got one photo for free at 12 and 20 weeks - but no photos at subsequent scans if they are needed for medical reasons (which I did). Currently pregnant and being treated at Lewisham - they give you three photos (all the same), but you do have to pay a tenner and tell them in advance, although they make that clear.
I had a private scan at 16 weeks because that's the earliest you can tell the sex, so didn't want before then. Check out GroupOn for deals on scans - you can save a lot.

Yeah they told me upfront that there wouldn't be a print out. It didn't hugely bother me to be honest but that's because I knew in time to take my own pics!

We got a printout of 6 photos at our 12 week NHS scan, and didn’t have to pay for anything.
