I usually take l lysine daily. Stopped when I fell pregnant. Just over 7 wks now and my mouth has erupted in cold sores Envy anyone know can I take l lysine. I know dr google says no but it usually always says that for pregnancy as no testing done.

This is mumsnet, come on now. If you have a medical question like this you really shouldn't be asking anyone other than your GP. How do you know anybody's credentials here? I could say "yes I'm a midwife and its totally safe." You'd know no different, even though behind my phone screen I could be literally anyone. Especially if a cursory glance at Google says no..

@milkytwilight oh buzz off! Why bother to write that. Just scroll on by 🙄

Defensive or what 😅 if you want to make a potentially stupid mistake while pregnant by asking random people on the Internet whether you can take medication then knock yourself out, especially when Google has said no, its daft and you know it.

QueenLagertha · 13/09/2021 21:00

@milkytwilight it's a natural food supplement I'm not asking about taking crack cocaine.
Just want to hear what others have been told during pregnancy. Surely this is the point of mumsnet

I didn't take it while pregnant. I was on enough medication I could t face one more but I totally understand your frustration and pain.

I would call your gp and ask about acyclovir tablets. I'm almost certain they can be taken while pregnant and they can give you some relief.

No, its not the point of mumsnet. That's the point of a doctor. Mumsnet is for discussion, not medical advice, especially when your research so far says don't do it. Dress it up how you want but if your decision on whether to take it rests on strangers on the Internet I really don't think its out of order to point that out.

I usually take aciclovir for outbreaks and was told to avoid it in both pregnancies… unless I had an outbreak close to delivery, in which case they gave me a course to avoid outbreaks at delivery.

But I was recommended a Herpotherm thing, which works well and totally safe during pregnancy.

@cookiemonster5 they're horrible aren't they? One blister is inside my top lip too 😫 making it hard to eat. And I feel so disgusting. I've only ever taken aciclovir once years ago when I had a severe outbreak. Since I started taking courses of the l lysine my outbreaks have been few and far between. And very minor. Haven't had one in years.

I'll see how I am in the morning and I might have to try to ring to get something prescribed?

Any other tips for dealing with them?

Thanks @SillyBry just looked that up on Amazon and the reviews look good. It's definitely worth a try!

perhaps look for the lip balm with lysine in, Holland and barratt used to sell it but not sure if they still do.

QueenLagertha · 13/09/2021 21:44

Ohh I didn't realise it was available in a cream @Thisyearcandoone thank you

@QueenLagertha well I thought for £30 it was worth trying as they make me miserable!! I’ve only used it for one outbreak, but it certainly helped with the itch and pain when it was about to blister!

QueenLagertha · 13/09/2021 22:05

@SillyBry I have it ordered 😂 I would spend my last penny. I know it'll prob be too late now for this outbreak but at least I'll have it for the next one.
