What to buy new for second baby?

We've got a loft full of toys and clothes from ds1 so I've sort of been thinking I didn't need to get anything new.
Then I remembered there's stuff like maternity pads and newborn nappies to buy, but I can't think what else!
What else do I need or should buy new?
Thanks in advance ☺

Watching!

I’m looking into getting a soft sling for in the house as we only have a meaty one for walks
Breast pads
New cloths for bathtime
Bibs as previous ones ruined by my toddler
New mattress for the cot
Treating myself to some new nipple shields (just in case - they were a godsend last time)

Im still thinking!

CupcakesK · 26/08/2021 11:49

Following also!
I think you are supposed to buy new mattresses for cots (if using the same one) for subsequent babies.

i'm also trying to think of how we will transport everyone around - maybe a buggyboard to attach to your old pram (depending on how old your DS1 is)?

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 26/08/2021 11:54

So I’m 36 weeks, this time having a girl (my first was a boy)

I’ve bought a bedside crib - didn’t have one with my first.
Double pram (second hand)
Obviously nappies/reusable wipes etc
Some girls clothes although not many, a lot of my DS’s baby stuff 0-6months is neutral so can be used again.
And honestly I think that’s it!

Second one seems seems so much easier, because you know the essentials as such, and have most from the first.

Isbobmyuncle · 26/08/2021 12:01

@WeAllLikeVindaloo which double did you go for? I’m looking at the mountain buggy duet

MrsPear · 26/08/2021 12:05

A new mattress- sids guidelines.
An outfit for them to come home in.
A new blanket.
Nappies and bottles.

Zarene · 26/08/2021 12:08

The new mattress guidelines only apply to not using a mattress from another family. As long as it's in good nick it's totally fine to use one again for a sibling!

PrimeraVez · 26/08/2021 12:12

I bought new first size stuff (sleep suits and vests) as most of DC1s old stuff was looking pretty worn.

Also new muslins, dummies and bottles and obviously restocking disposable crap like breast pads, milk storage bags etc.

Also got a buggy board (which we hated)

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/08/2021 12:15

New mattress, new teats for the bottles because I vaguely remember cutting some of them but not which, few new clothes, gift from the older one to the sibling that we chose together on a special outing (and a quiet visit to Amazon for “baby” to choose little gifts for the older one).

MeadowHay · 26/08/2021 12:17

I'm 34 weeks with no.2 and gradually getting bits bought now. My DC1 is 3.

Off the top of my head I've already bought:

  • Baby toiletries like shampoo, bath/wash, moisturiser, nappy cream
  • Abidec baby vitamin
  • Toiletries for me like Lansinoh, maternity pads, disposable undies, breast pads
  • Bought a new stroller mainly for DC1 for now because our old one is crap and giving up the ghost. We got a new one with a big weight limit (25kg) but can also be used from newborn with a full recline. Our old one definitely wouldn't have lasted through DC2's toddler years as it was in a right state.
  • Bought a secondhand Chicco Next to Me as our bedside crib for DC1 was a rental so we don't have it anymore and the company don't do the rental scheme anymore.
  • Got a new rain cover for the pram through the guarantee as our old one was all broken and ripped.
  • Formula: have bought a newborn starter kit, one big bottle of premade, one pack of little premades and one tub of powder.
  • Box of bottles with size 1 teats as the type of bottles we used last time aren't widely available anymore
  • Pack of dummies
  • Electric breast pump (didn't have one last time and wish I had)
  • 1 pack each of size 0, 1 and 2 nappies as who knows how big baby will be
  • Changing mat
  • Bottle brush
  • New pads and leads for my Tens machine
  • Paracetamol and ibuprofen for me PP
  • Chocolate for my hospital bag Grin
  • Probably other things I can't think of right now.

Off the top of my head we still need to buy:

  • New mattresses for the next to me, and the rocking cradle if we are going to use it and order a new pram carrycot mattress through the guarantee
  • Some new clothes mostly newborn ones. DC1 was a summer baby in a heatwave whereas this will be an autumn baby so we need more clothes and layers this time
  • Lascal buggy board
  • Bikini top for me as hoping to try the birthing pool this time
  • Possibly some more nursing clothes if I can get any good cheap secondhand deals
  • Possibly something that plays lullabies (DC1 has a thing that attaches to her bed and she can press it on and off and it plays lullabies which she still uses but this isn't produced anymore)
  • Snacks for the hospital bag
  • Possibly an isofix base for the infant car seat
  • Possibly sleeping bags as we can't for the life of us find the ones we used with DC1 Confused
  • Hair brush and/or comb
WeAllLikeVindaloo · 26/08/2021 12:44

@Isbobmyuncle we’ve got the city mini baby jogger. I’ve not actually had much chance to test it out yet. Although it is second hand so I can always sell on if I don’t get on with it. If I’m honest I’m dreading having to have a double 🙈

tuxedocat · 26/08/2021 14:03

Following this!
We will buy a new cot mattress as my son is just moving to a single bed and it’s not in great nick, but do we need one for the snuzpod does anyone know?

Thank you!

Mommabear20 · 26/08/2021 14:22

Maternity pads
Breast pads
Nappies
Bottles and teets
Dummy's
Moses basket
Sheets
Cot and mattress
Burp clothes
Pushchair (double of DC is still young enough to need 1)
Think that's everything we got new for our DC2
Good luck ladies!

Samanabanana · 26/08/2021 14:26

New mattress for crib (and will get one for the cot when the time comes)! A few new items of clothes that are "theirs". A new special soft toy. A blanket of their own (my first still loves his baby blanket despite being 5!). Nappies, wipes, dummies (if using), steriliser tablets, maternity stuff, comfy pants for after birth, bottles etc (if planning to bottle feed), breast pump parts etc. And anything you think would have been handy last time but you didn't shell out on!

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 26/08/2021 14:37

@tuxedocat I’m sure you can reuse your snuzpod mattress! It’s just If you buy second hand ones you should replace.

Sceptre86 · 26/08/2021 15:02

I had a dd first time around and then a son. I purchased a new mattress for the crib. I had lots of neutral clothes which I reused. I bought some clothes for my son, nappies, cotton wool, maternity pads, some clothes for my hospital bag. I bought him some grobags because he didn't like being swaddled. I used the same bouncer, highchair, steriliser and changing mat but did buy new bottles. I then purchased a baby nest which I used to put him down in when dealing with my dd. We also bought a double buggy. I also bought him a special blanket and teddy from his big sister.

Aozora13 · 26/08/2021 15:13

I made a tactical error and had DC1 in the height of summer and DC2 at the start of winter which meant for the first few months I had to buy weather-appropriate clothes for DC2.

firstimemamma · 26/08/2021 15:47

Chest of drawers
Cot And mattress (ds' cot was able to be changed into a big boy bed which he is in now so we'll need a new cot)
Carrier / sling
Toiletries
Cloth nappies (size 1)
Emergency pack disposable nappies
Baby bath
Special toy
Baby journal

That's what my list looks like but I'm only 12 weeks so yet to buy anything.

GhostRyder · 26/08/2021 16:06

Nappies, bottles if bottle feeding, sterilising equipment if you haven’t already got some, muslin cloths if previous ones have been ruined, a change mat if you no longer have one to hand.

Cannes12 · 26/08/2021 17:50

Thanks all this is really useful, turns out there's quite a lot!
I've been wondering about buggy boards, really want to try one out with my toddler but can't seem to find any actual shops that sell them, can only find online grr.

Dyra · 26/08/2021 19:21

Another one following along! DC2 is due late March. DC1 will be 2y6mo.

As well as consumables, I know I'll definitely need a sling for inside the house and a new bedside cot.

Maybes are: A buggy board, but I'm hoping to get by with baby wearing and keeping my toddler in her pram. I'm due early spring, so should be ok. Possibly a Moses basket for downstairs.

Going to have to go through my loft in a few months and see what I already have.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 26/08/2021 20:29

I had a girl first then a boy, so really only bought clothes as I didn’t have much gender neutral stuff (and one was a winter baby and the other summer 🤦🏻‍♀️). We reused the pram, car seat, Snuzpod, cot, mattresses etc as all had been well looked after and not stored for long. We did also buy a buggy board which was a big hit with DD (though a massive pain for whoever’s pushing the buggy!). My age gap was 2.5 years.

Milkbottlelegs · 26/08/2021 20:38

Mine were born opposite sides of the year so had to buy more clothes than I expected.

AdriannaP · 26/08/2021 21:00

Do I really need a new mattress? Only used by DC1.
From when on are you using dummies? And what’s a good sling for the house? I have one for outdoor walks.

tuxedocat · 27/08/2021 08:53

@WeAllLikeVindaloo thank you - that’s one less thing to get!

buggy boards - are they worth it? We will have a 4yr age gap so he doesn’t use a pushchair at all but wonder if for ease of use/longer days out it could be useful. Or perhaps a huge waste of time?
