Hello everyone! I've just had my very first BFPs and I'm just wondering if it's normal for your gp to refer you to a maternity clinic who tell you to wait a month for your first appointment, then tell you they don't do any health checks and that you'll just have to wait for your first appointment ? Thank you so much !

Thank you @lockdownbabyx I might check out the private scans. Since I'll really want to see how everything is at 8 weeks. 🥰

@Doveydove I don't blame you! 12 weeks is such a long time to wait to see them for the first time! Not sure where you are but I've had a few private scans at window to the womb, they have clinics around the UK and it's been a lovely experience each time. Definitely worth the money ☺️ xx

Confused521 · 09/08/2021 16:28
@Confused521thanks so much! Yeah I definitely get what you mean ! The less poking and prodding from strangers, the better. 😅 by the way do you or does anyone know if they usually offer scans at booking appointment at 8 weeks and if you can hear heartbeat at that point as well. Sorry if the questions are dumb. Very new to this 😅
Once I booked, my scan appointments were also booked automatically (except the 20-week one which I had to check). Just ask her when you next speak and she can follow it up.

Doveydove · 09/08/2021 16:30

@Confused521oh okay I get you ! Thanks again 😁

@lockdownbabyx It really is 😄 I'm in Surrey there are a few Window to the Wombs near me. I wasn't sure if they did 8 week scans. Thank you for recommending ! 💕

@Doveydove also just to make you aware of you do book an early scan at 8 weeks, it will more than likely be an internal scan, rather than over your tummy. They don't hurt at all I don't find, just a little uncomfortable. Xx

Yeah they definitely do! Think they call them viability scans, can be done from 8 weeks xx

Amz6219 · 09/08/2021 16:52

Just thinking about it and I had private scan weeks before any NHS appointment / confirmations! I had MMC last year so was very anxious - had scan at 8 weeks with window to the womb :)

Doveydove · 09/08/2021 17:04

@lockdownbabyx I think I have had one before when I was getting my coil checked out. They wanted to see where it was with an ultrasound.😁 I've booked a 7 week scan ! The day before a family birthday 😂

@Amz6219 that makes sense ! Oh I'm sorry to hear that. That's why I want to get an early scan ! Mine will be before my first appointment as well. 😊

I saw the midwife at 7 weeks, she took bloods and blood pressure. We went through a health questionnaire and she referred me to the hospital for my 12 week scan. Same with my first

ripplestitchblank · 09/08/2021 18:39

Completely normal, there's nothing to check this early on.

Doveydove · 09/08/2021 21:02

@HereIfYouNeedMe thank you very much!

It really confused me too OP.

The NHS website said to phone your gp who will organise all of your appointments and chat to you about pregnancy health, choices etc.

I had a really quick phone call with a really disinterested doctor who basically gave me a prescription for folic (which I already had) and booted me off to the midwife. I had to press him to ask whether she'd set up my scans and tests. Useful fuck he was Angry

But yeah, midwife took it from there and has been wonderful.

SecondCityShark · 09/08/2021 23:48

*useless

Doveydove · 10/08/2021 02:09

@secondcityshark I'm so sorry ! That's so annoying. Seems some doctors just do it for the money. 😒 My first appointment is next month but I'm getting a private scan in 20 days.

Hey congratulations! I’m pregnant with my/our first (10 weeks) and it’s definitely normal which really threw me off! 😂 I was so excited, still am, and remember phoning the GP who said you need to phone the midwifery team at the hospital which I did and they said they’d get in touch. I remember thinking, is that it?!?!? Haha. Then waiting for weeks until a midwife phoned for a booking appointment, mid week 7 and now I wait until my 12 week scan. I now understand why it’s done like this since there’s not really a lot to check in these early weeks but it feels like such a long time to wait and see.

Doveydove · 11/08/2021 01:14

@Yasmina22 thanks so much congratulations to you too ! 💕 I know it's so long ! I couldn't resist booking a private 7 week scan! 😂 Hope all goes well with your scan ! 💕💕💕

I don't even get to speak to my doctor I just have to self refer its their standard practice and then you have first appointment at about 9 weeks
