34 weeks baby measuring BIG!!! 6.15 pounds.... FREAKING OUT

I yesterday seen my consultant for a growth scan to be told my baby boy was measuring at 6 pounds 15 ounces which to me is crazy... he’s right off the lines on the graph and this is worrying me... my bump isn’t overly big and I haven’t gained much weight anywhere else
Anyone else have the same experience?

Doesn't sound to huge to me, my ds was 7lbs 7ozs when he was born at just over 36 weeks. What did your consultant say about it?

Garman · 05/08/2021 15:24

*too

Don’t they put on roughly 1/2 lb a week towards the end of pregnancy? So that would make him 9-10lbs, which is a normal size (large but normal) and that is even if you get to 40 weeks, 37 weeks is term. . Also they do all grow at different rates, so he may not grow so quickly. Scans are not always very accurate, I was told mine would be 3lbs LESS than she actually was. (Skinny, but long baby)

Did they express any concerns OP? Is that why you are worried? I personally don't think that's overly huge for a baby his age, I don't know how big mine was as didn't have a scan around that time but he was over 8lbs when born at 39 weeks

RedElephants · 05/08/2021 15:39

I had gestational diabetes with my 2nd child, he made his appearance at approx 35weeks, weighing 8lb 15oz..
My eldest was born a day early, he weighed 8lb 8oz..

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 05/08/2021 15:43

I was induced two weeks early because my baby was on the 99th centile for size.

She was born weighing a perfectly 50th centile 7lb 10oz.

They're not known for being terribly accurate measurements tbh.

Why is it worrying you? Did they tell you it was something to worry about? Growth scans are not very accurate in my experience. They were all worried about my first DS being small, they estimated no more than 6lb by birth, but he came a week early and was 9lb 6oz. DS2 came two weeks early and he was 10lb 8oz. Some people just have bigger than average babies, it's not a big deal really.

My little girl has been measuring big. At my 36 week growth scan she was measuring 7.5lbs - I’ve had to do all the tests for diabetes and the diabetes midwife called me today to tell me that I absolutely do not have diabetes and nor do I have any medical reason to be growing a baby that is too big for my body. I’ve cancelled my induction for next week and will be carrying on with the pregnancy - I’ve spent months worrying so I get it but don’t freak out too much yet. If there is no concern then your body can handle your baby xx

Eviethyme · 05/08/2021 16:08

Sorry but sounds like a freak out for nothing. Both my kids came out 9 lb 6
And I didn't tear either time and both was relatively easy so I'm Unsure why people make such a big deal about about it fair enough if having a 12 pounder but it doesn't sound like you will be if only 6lb

Chelyanne · 05/08/2021 16:48

Try not to worry too much.

Yep, our girl jumped above the top line of the growth charts at 35+6. I've opted for an elcs over induction at 39wk this time as I had elcs with our twins and don't want to risk scar rupture and end up with emcs.
Our 2nd was the same on growth scans. I had a natural unassisted birth with him at 40+5wk, he was 10lb 12oz. His shoulders did get a bit stuck but got him out with 14 minutes of pushing so not too bad.

No he did not seem concerned infact he spent a lot more time lecturing me about not having had my Covid jab tbh.... he did say he’s taken a growth spurt so they will test me for gestional diabetes but only because of this growth because there is not other signs pointing to this .... I’m 21 I was tiny before pregnancy and have gained roughly 2 stone so far and there was no sugar in urine.... but when I seen where that left me on the graph I couldn’t help but panick ... my partner is 6ft 5 and was a 10 pound baby so maybe this might have something to do with it? Or maybe I’m over worrying this is my first baby so I’m just anxious .... thanks for the reassurance x

Your probably right I am freaking out over nothing .... but I’m 5ft 2 and was only 8 and a half stone before pregnancy so I’m just worried about how capable I am of birthing a bigger baby .... probably just anxious over nothing

I am slightly shorter than you, and when I became pregnant with my babies I weighed around 8 stone. My two weighed 8 Ib 11 and 9 Ib 8 oz when they were born. The younger one was born with no intervention at all because his head had been born when I arrived at hospital. I am not a small build, so we may be quite different, but I had no difficulty giving birth to them. You will be fine. The doctors and midwives will look after you. Congratulations on your pregnancy and I wish you and your baby the very best.
