Advice about blood glucose please!

Currently pricking my finger 4 times a day as baby is measuring big. GTT came back with blood glucose 3.5 fasting and 3.5 2 hours after glucose drink.

My question is - I have been getting good low results (all less that 5.9) but I’ve had 2 really low. Yesterday morning before food was 2.5 & after dinner tonight was 3.4. Is this a problem? Or should I just forget about it?

I know nothing about diabetes!

Thanks x

Did they give you any advice, what are you eating, they do seem low, I would contact your midwife or doctor. Did you have the gtt done in a clinic.

Are you diabetic anyway and on any medication

Sheisfee · 29/07/2021 19:03

@DogsSausages - they said as long as it was under 5.3 in the morning and under 7.8 after eating then it’s fine but they didn’t say anything about them being low low. Would low blood sugar have any affect on baby being bigger?

Just eating my normal vegan diet.

Nope, not diabetic.

I am no expert but they do sound low, it would be best to ask them for advice and let them know your readings.

Sheisfee · 29/07/2021 19:11

@DogsSausages I think I will! Thanks x

I've got GD and had quite a few low readings, I've been told by my diabetic team they only worry about low readings if you're taking insulin. However I'd recommend speaking to your team just to be sure!

Sheisfee · 29/07/2021 21:24

@Jurassiclover thank you for that! I’ll definitely have a chat with the midwife x

You can't really get a physiological hypoglycaemia if you're not diabetic or on insulin, and you've got a decent glucagon response. Your body will sort it out and release glucose from your liver once it notices your blood sugar is low. Nothing to worry about, just try eating a little more often.

I have GD and am on insulin for it. Because of that I have to be very careful of readings below 4 as this can mean a hypo.

Before I was on insulin however I wasn’t given any warnings about low readings, just high ones.

As they are quite low though I’d maybe try upping how frequently you eat, maybe try little and often so that your body isn’t ever going too long without food.

I don’t think it’s anything to worry about though seeing as you aren’t insulin dependent. Your readings all sound pretty good.

Are you washing your hands before doing the fingerprick - and might there still be a bit of water on your hands? Diluted blood gives lower readings (speaking from experience 😆)
