Anyone know anything about HCG and twins?!

Yesterday, 23DPO, my HCG was 8147.

Back story - I already have 2 children, and have had 2 miscarriages back to back this year. Last miscarriage was June 17th at 7 weeks.

Fell pregnant again right away, no period. Sarted spotting brown over the weekend, called EPU on Monday and they got me in first thing next day for bloods which were 8147. The intention was to repeat them 48 hours later but they instead told me to go in for a scan first thing Thursday morning because that was much higher than expected. She said its around 60% higher than my 6 weeks bloods with my second child (lots of bleeding issues with him and he was fine) and much higher than what she'd expect for my dates. She said they want to scan ASAP to check for multiples?!

We have me dated at 5w6d today because that was when the miscarriage happened, its likely I'm earlier than that but the general consensus is that I can't physically be anymore than that. EPU think I would be 5w3d going by ovulation on 4th July, but also noted that my cycles are irregular so could be even earlier than that. Especially with the miscarriages messing with cycles.

Anyway, I'm worried its too early to see anything on a scan but she said with my levels they'd expect to see a sac (or two) at least.

Has anyone been through an even vaguely similar experience? Did your levels indicate twins? Has anyone seen anything on a scan before 6 weeks? I've googled everything I possibly can and thought maybe hearing some real experiences might calm the nerves a bit until tomorrow!

I’ve never been pregnant with twins, but I have always been told once HCG is over and 1000 then there should be something visible in there on a scan. Fingers crossed for you! Xx

Alltimeblow · 28/07/2021 10:40

@babymuffinxo Ah thank you! ❤

Mine were almost 4000 at 21 dpo and were almost tripling over 40 hours, they suggested possibility of twins but scan showed just one. Apparently (I don't know if this is true) hcg can be higher for pregnancies after a miscarriage as the body's way of trying to ensure success of the next pregnancy. I'd had a miscarriage before

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 That's interesting, thank you for sharing! 2 would be great but 1 extra sticky baby would be wonderful too.

I had severe Hyperemesis. Very severe.

When I was 5 weeks I started being sick and was hospitalised. They took my bloods and took me for a scan pretty much straightaway once they had the results.

I was so sick I was producing enough hormone to sustain 8 babies they told me.

There was only one.

Alltimeblow · 28/07/2021 11:05

@Pumpkinstace Oh my goodness, that sounds awful! I haven't had any sickness at all so was surprised by the number. Had sickness before when it was way less. I guess you can't really tell until you're scanned.

I had twins. Never got hcg measured but I the pregnancy test I did at around 21DPO went to a very strong positive very quickly - much more quickly that other pregnancies

Alltimeblow · 28/07/2021 11:49

@OnTheBrink1 The last test I did was 19DPO and it was a 'dye stealer' with almost no control line... Very intrigued to see what happens, seems there's no real way to tell!

I got a faint +at 7dpo and a strong one at 8dpo with my second pregnancy.

That was just me over producing hormone again and there was still only one baby.

I wasn't such until week 7 with that pregnancy but it was still severe HG. I got sterilised after.

Pumpkinstace · 28/07/2021 11:55

Wasnt sick, that should say.

Interesting.. I found that from about 6 or 7 weeks pregnant, I noticed something was different in hindsight. Very breathless early on, felt more tired, much much more hunger and nausea than other pregnancies

Enwi · 28/07/2021 21:35

No advice or experience to share but I’m following to see how your scan goes. Good luckSmile

Quornflakegirl · 28/07/2021 21:38

I had twins and got a BFF at 8dpo.

MuchTooTired · 28/07/2021 21:46

I’m sorry about your previous losses 💐

I’ve attached a pic of my hcg blood results when I was pregnant with my DTs, not because of my levels just because it has a chart of expected levels for pregnancy by week!

Mine was 369 at about 10 days after my transfer so pretty high but it turned out both embryos had stuck.

I had a scan at bang on 6w and saw both sacs and heartbeats.

Good luck tomorrow!

Anyone know anything about HCG and twins?!
Goodtohear · 28/07/2021 21:51

My second pregnancy was twins - because I had fertility treatment my bloods were monitored regularly and compared to my previous pregnancy. By 4weeks they were just over double and increased quicker than the first pregnancy (can't remember the numbers they're 12 now). They didn't scan till 6 1/2 weeks but told me at 4 weeks to prepare.

ivfgottwins · 29/07/2021 03:17

I had twins and at 21DPO (ivf equivalent) they were around 3500 x

Alltimeblow · 29/07/2021 05:51

@Quornflakegirl I got my BFP at 8DPO too!

Thank you so much for all the replies! I'm really nervous now 😳 I have my scan literally first thing this morning, I'm the first appointment. So I'll be back later with an update. Hoping for at least one healthy little baby!

I had my hcg measured when I started spotting. It was 89,152!!! I was slightly further on than expected (6 weeks) and was having twins. Apparently bleeding is very common in twin pregnancies.

Alltimeblow · 29/07/2021 09:14

So a little update. I'm definitely earlier than we thought, couldn't see baby but could see the sac and yolk which looked fine. There was either the beginning of a second sac or a second sac which had collapsed and was possibly the cause of the spotting, she couldn't really tell for sure as was much smaller than the other one. Have to go back in 2 weeks, but it seems like there either is two or there was two. Going to be a long wait, just hope there's at least one healthy baby when I go back Smile

@Alltimeblow thank you for the update, I’ve been thinking of you today! Fingers crossed for 2 weeks time, look after yourself 💐

Alltimeblow · 29/07/2021 15:53

@MuchTooTired Thank you! ❤ Hopefully I'll have a good update to share in 2 weeks!

Ah the wait is agonising! Got everything crossed for you xx

Chel194 · 01/08/2021 23:04

Hey guys, after some advice.

Found out I was pregnant 2 weeks ago, unfortunately don't know how far on I would of been as always had irregular periods, can go some months without one atal.

Anyway started with cramps and bleeding 6 days later, only bled for 1 day(period like) and just had brown discharge everyday since. Had an internal scan on Wednesday which showed nothing 😞

Started having bloods done on the Wednesday, first HCG was 112, was called back for repeat which was 150. Another set of bloods taken today, should get results tomorrow.

Has this happened to anyone and gone on to have a viable pregnancy or is it not good news! I think the worse all the time just to prepare myself. I've been trying for 3 years and only fell pregnant this time. Also has PSOS.

X

Africa2go · 01/08/2021 23:13

OP I had a scan at 5+5 after spotting, 2 sacs, one slightly smaller than the other. I was also sent home to wait for another scan 2 weeks later - when I saw 2 sacs and 2 heartbeats. Good luck

babymuffinxo · 02/08/2021 07:46

Hi @Chel194
I’m no expert but have always been told that HCG numbers need to be (at least almost) doubling in 24 hours to be a viable pregnancy, unusual for numbers to be increasing at all if you’ve had a loss though. Did the drs/sonographer give you any information about what they think may be happening? So sorry you’re going through this, the waiting to find out is horrible x
