hi all,

I didnt know you weren't supposed to eat soft ice cream from shops/stalls!? I'm 21 weeks pregnant and just had one - cue horrified gasp from my friend when I told her (who is also pregnant).

I've looked on the nhs website foods to avoid and I cannot see anything that says you cant have soft ice cream? I understand people might be weary of ice cream Van's more so than shops/permanent stalls etc. but if it was a huge risk surely it would be on the nhs website?

friend is berating me currently!

My life the local ice cream man targeted me, saw a huge preg woman chasing down his van lol think I kept him in business, I ate quite a bit of mr whippy and McFlurrys and baby is fine

Oh OP I did the same thing and panicked but the risk is tiny Flowers.

Try not to worry!

Omg I didn't even know about this lol! I've eaten shit loads of McFlurrys so far and am 27 weeks pregnant 😂😅

I never knew this before this pregnancy, this is 5th to do well. Hadicecreams from the ice cream van with no issues multiple times. Rusk is very low so enjoy an ice cream if you fancy it.

I've checked the hygiene rating of where I got it from and it was 4/5 star so I feel quite happy with that. it's an actual shop/stall that is always there too so I am assuming follows potentially more rigorous cleaning than ice cream Van's and are powered off main supplies rather than batteries (had also heard that in Van's the temperature of the machines can go down because of energy, not sure how accurate this is) and also as it isnt on the nhs foods to avoid I am reassuring myself if it was a big issue it would be on there. I would hope anyway!

Pregnancy can take my cured meats… but it will never take my Mr Whippy!!

morepizzapls · 20/07/2021 18:15

@MyMabel I had a wobble with cured meats over the weekend too! was at a wedding and the starter was some asparagus wrapped in meat with a sauce and some potato salad thing. DH told me it was bacon - I took a mouthful, realised it wasnt and was told it was in fact jamon (apologies if you knew this but Spanish cured ham!)

Read Emily Osters books - great pragmatic, evidence driven and risk based advice, on what to avoid.

@morepizzapls I bent the rules a lot in my first pregnancy; I ate cured meats, unpasteurised cheeses, I did have an occasional wine/lemonade spritzer. Didn’t cause us any issues at all but for some reason this time I’m really trying to follow the rules 😂
