Confused - fundal height measurement

Hi all

I'm 29 weeks today and had my midwife appointment for my first fundal height measurement.

She mentioned that the baby is measuring on the slightly larger side of the normal range.

I've just had a look at my notes and the SFH is 29cm - which says to me its normal? Im confused why she thinks he's on the larger side. Anyone else had this that could clarify?!

Thank you

Hi, under the previous guidelines 29cm at 29 weeks would have been exactly normal as the cm are supposed to track the weeks (+/-2cm). However they now create personalised growth charts and so 29cm might be large for you. I’m a bit unclear what inputs they use to calculate your personalised growth chart though, so couldn’t say why specifically that is. I wouldn’t worry about it at all though as fundal height measurement is pretty inaccurate! If it was weirdly large for you she would have referred you for a growth scan.

Ah okay maybe that explains it then.

I was just paying attention to the fact I was 29cm at 29 weeks which seemed to be totally normal!

Don't you have a graph? We have graphs here and if you fall outside a particular range or you deviate from the line you're tracking then they send you for a growth scan. As PP said, if they were concerned they'd have sent you for a scan so presumably you just measure on the larger end of the normal range.

Yes I have a graph but it looks completely normal to me. I wondered why she said he was measuring on the larger side when it looks like I'm slap bang in the middle of normal.

Aw cute, baby's first growth spurt!

Fundal height is open to interpretation 😂
Ive had two different midwives measure me at 26 weeks and 28 weeks. At my 28 weeks I was measuring 31cm (31weeks) putting baby well above 99th centile. I went for a growth scan, baby is actually only just meeting 50th centile and they have no concern about size at all. Growth scan overrides fundal height and she's glady not going to be a whopper!
I'd say 29cm at 29 weeks is very good and follows the rule of fundal height 😁
