Getting depressed with limited diet due to 'morning' sickness

I suffered pretty badly with sickness during my first pregnancy too but guess I had forgotten how awful it was plus I now have a 3 year old to entertain...

I am on Ondasetron which does stop 90% of the vomiting but I feel sick constantly. The only things I can force down are:
Pineapple (also drink the juice from canned)
Nectarines (but not the skin)
Toast with honey or jam
Jam sandwiches
Drinks of milk sometimes but I can't drink water or squash or fizzy stuff. Just milk and the juice from cans of pineapple...

Despite trying to force food down I keep getting painful hunger pains every hour or so so I have to try and force down something else that I don't want.

I have never had a sweet tooth and love savoury food so weeks of these foods has really started to make me depressed and just want to sleep all day so I don't have to feel sick. The house is an absolute tip and DS has been watching a lot more tv than I would normally allow. DH is great and tries hard to help but he is working full time.

I am coming up to 12 weeks. I remember last time I felt pretty bad the whole way through but was able to eat some more variety at some point I think around 5 months... also I am producing soooooo much saliva that I can't swallow as it makes me vomit so I am spitting constantly which is disgusting...

The thought of this going on for months longer is horrible and I really feel I am neglecting my Ds. I guess I just want to complain and see if anyone else is in the same boat or wants to give some hope...

Oh bless you, I really feel for you Flowers

I was the same, my diet was pretty much just toast, crackers and potato waffles. I turned a corner at around 17 weeks, I really hope you don’t have long to go before you start feeling better!

Thank you, just feeling so down today. I dream of having a big cold drink and being able to just drink it 😍 one day soon I hope...

I can totally relate to what you're going through - if it gives you some hope, I turned a corner at about 14 weeks and since then it's just the tiredness I'm still experiencing! Fingers crossed your sickness eases off very soon!

In my first pregnancy I pretty much lived off jacobs cream crackers, ice cold fizzy water and Granny Smith apples for about a month.

I found eating late at night helped as it meant I wasn't as hungry in the morning which meant I also wasn't as nauseous which meant I could stomach a little bit more food at the start of the day which helped.

Blondiecub0109 · 29/06/2021 16:45

OP you remind me of me. The only fluids I could stomach was R Whites Lemonade ice lollies - it had to be them specifically. Can you get fluids in ice form?

It will pass and every medical professional I spoke to just told me to eat what I could when I could.

Have you been in touch with pregnancy sickness support? Their Instagram is great for reminding you that you are not alone

The only thing I could keep down was McDonald's chips and Heinz Tomato soup, Dd was unexpectedly born with beautiful red / tomato soup coloured hair. Which we jokingly put down to my restricted diet

If you are hungry can you add more calories to your restricted meals and include nuts or seeds like chia and flax to stave off hunger and increase the nutrients.

I'm 8 weeks and could have written this. My list of tolerated foods is getting smaller as every time I bring something up I can't stomach it again. I don't have any help but sending unmumsnetty hugs

misskatie90 · 29/06/2021 16:57

Aww bless you. I felt the same for the first ten weeks but now at 15 weeks my sickness has mostly gone now I just get very tired. I had to cut my hours down at work as I was so sick. I used to keep rice cakes and cereal cars in a drawer next to my bed when I woke up throughout the night or early in the morning. I made sure I had pre cooked food in the fridge encase I was too ill too cook. I lived on spear mint soft mints, dry crackers, toast and lentil soup. I also carried a water bottle everywhere I went, and tried to go out for small walks to get fresh air even if I was feeling awful. Hope you feel better soon.

Been there and I really feel for you. It is awful. Flowers

I found that taking cyclizine on top of the ondansetron helped a bit (when cyclizine on its own didn’t) and lived off full-sugar coke and breadsticks at the worst bits.

Floralnomad · 29/06/2021 17:02

I was sick for the entire pregnancy with my first , eventually my diet consisted entirely of jacket potato with butter , toast with butter or cheesy wotsits , none of which are that bad when they revisit you later .

Thanks everyone.

@Blondiecub0109 sadly icelollies don't help much. They are ok going in but immediately afterwards the syrupyness makes me feel bleh. Ice chips are like drinking my own saliva 🤢 but you are right, if I can manage an icelolly a day then that's some fluids 😊

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime hmm more calories is a good idea. I can't handle the texture of nuts or seeds right now but I did manage very sweet porridge the other day so might try more of that.

@GoldenOmber thanks, I was taking cyclizine but it just made me too tired to function. Thanks for the support it's a good reminder there is an end to this. ☺

Thanks everyone, sorry to those also going through this. One day it will be just a distant memory Flowers

I could have written this post!
From week 6 onwards I have felt terrible and was diagnised with HG and put on meds at week 12.

All I coukd drink was ice cold water or weak squash. Food wise I lived on crackers, pasta and fish fingers.
Nothing else appealed or stayed down.
Since Ive been on anti sickness meds Ive been able to eat more but its far from perfect. Im not feeling sick the whole time but I still have the odd day where its awful.
There is light at the end of the tunnel im sure, hang in there!
