In my hospital folder it recommends to take a Top and Tail bowl for baby, I got one delivered and it's bigger than I expected, did you all take one to hospital with you? Im just thinking of the room it's going to take up in my hospital bag 🤔

I got one of these and to be honest I just used it for storage of things after a while. Didn’t take it to hospital, you won’t need it

Caramellatteplease · 28/06/2021 20:23

Never even used it with either of my too (many moons ago now) waste of plastic

PurBal · 28/06/2021 20:30

39 weeks pregnant and I had to Google what this was. Surely you just need warm water (any bowl will do?) and cotton wool?

DisgruntledPelican · 28/06/2021 20:35

There was a small foil bowl (like a big disposable pie dish Grin) in my hospital cabinet for this. I wouldn’t take one either.

SpacePotato · 28/06/2021 20:36

Never used one. Another thing we are told to waste money on.

Any bowl will do. As long as you wash face first and bum last it's fine.

sarah13xx · 28/06/2021 20:39

My mum asked me about this and I had no clue what she was talking about! I have packed cotton wool because I know some midwives insist you use it but I’ve also packed water wipes as I’m having a section and really think I’ll just be trying to do it as quickly and easily as I can

APeakyBlinder · 28/06/2021 20:42

Return it, it's like the least used/ necessary baby item- just wash head down. I remember panic buying one at 38 weeks as some site told me I NEEDED one- it was used once before I realised how unnecessary it was!

Sally872 · 28/06/2021 20:42

Don't need it. Takes up space at hospital and not needed after. I used a clean bowl and did top then bottom. Not that it really mattered because you only use the bowl for clean water, any used cotton wool didn't go near the bowl again.

I did have a first time mum flap the first time visiting at my sister's with one bowl until she pointed this out Blush

TerribleCustomerCervix · 28/06/2021 20:44

Another but I’d plastic that’ll lie in landfill after a week of half hearted use before you realise it’s totally unnecessary

Caspianberg · 28/06/2021 20:44

Return it.
We use washable wipes, so warm water at every nappy change. We have just used a Tupperware tub the last year fine.

doodlejump1980 · 28/06/2021 20:45

You also don’t need a baby-wipes-warmer. :)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/06/2021 20:45

Never had one. Used a plastic washing up bowl until they grew a bit bigger.

cookiecreampie · 28/06/2021 20:46

I've had four kids and have never taken one to hospital. I guess maybe if you are going to use cotton wool to clean the baby's bum you could take one but I've always just used wipes. I had one to use at home with my first, I don't think I ever used it as it was easier and quicker to just bath him.

Orangedaisy · 28/06/2021 20:49

Didn’t take a bowl to hospital. At home it was a margarine tub for top and old Xmas pudding tub for bottom.

User0ne · 28/06/2021 20:58

3 DC here and I didn't know top and tail bowls existed. First thought on discovery: that'll be a waste of money/resources.

Get some reusable wipes and use the hot tap.

And as for a midwife insisting you use cotton wool; it's your baby and you can use whatever you want (obvs not sandpaper)

cantbeforeal · 28/06/2021 21:18

I forgot these existed Grin had one for my first baby 13 years ago but didn't buy one for the baby I just had and definitely didn't miss it lol

CoodleMoodle · 28/06/2021 22:25

My DM insisted I got one when I was having DD, seven years later and I still only use it to store shampoo bottles! Don't think I ever used it as intended for her, definitely didn't for DS.

DM said she used hers for me all the time, so I guess 30 years ago they were more widely used but nowadays not so much. (That said, people told me I didn't need a baby bath and I used that nearly every day for both DC when they were little. And the bath thermometer, which we still use now!)

Pinuporc · 28/06/2021 22:30

I bought one for pfb.
Used about twice for top and tail. Has lived under the bed as an emergency sick bowl for about 10 years!

QueenAdreena · 28/06/2021 22:31

Ours is now the family sick bowl!

Justmuddlingalong · 28/06/2021 22:35

I used mine for all 3DS. They're all in their 20s now, so it was obviously a thing of it's time, but I found it really useful.

Longdistance · 28/06/2021 22:35

We had one. It didn't last long, it was a faff if anything, as well as the baby bath.
