4mm feral pole, no heart rate - slow growth

Hi all,

I went for an early pregnancy scan two weeks ago (I believed I was six weeks pregnant at this point) the baby measured at 2mm but because they could not detect a heart rate they asked me to come back two weeks later.

I went for another scan yesterday thinking j was now 8 weeks pregnant - scan shows that I am six weeks and 2 days and baby is measuring 3.6mm - still no heart-rate was found but when I got home and googled a heart rate is usually found when the fetal pole is 7mm+.

Unfortunately, the midwife was quite brutal and said that this slow growth rate suggests that this is going to be a missed miscarriage but I was not ready to give up and have another scan in a weeks time. I am hopeful that the baby would have grown in this last week and caught up with it being so early in the pregnancy dates and measurements are not 100% accurate.

Any of you ladies been through anything similar too? I know there is still hope and I need to be positive but I also feel so lost and sad too.

Hello lovely, this sounds very much like what happened to me with my MMC. I had a scan at what should have been 8 weeks and saw a sac with a fetal pole. Was told it was too early. I returned a week later and there was a baby but no heartbeat. Returned another week later and there was a bigger baby (measuring 7mm by that point) but still no heartbeat. Even though it was clear by that point that it was not good news (I should have been 10 weeks!) they made me wait another torturous week to go back again and that time the baby was smaller and the sac had started to break down.

I would love for it to be a good outcome for you, but I think 1.6mm growth in a week is a bad sign Flowers

I am, I have had another beautiful little girl since that miscarriage. As horrible an experience as it was, I know now that my little girl wouldn’t be here if that had been a healthy pregnancy and I’m grateful that she is. It will all work out Flowers

I'm sorry that the midwife was brutal but from personal experience I'm afraid she's almost certainly right. I think you need to mentally prepare for the worst.

Unfortunately it doesn't sound good. There should definitely be a heartbeat with a fetal pole of 4mm. I'm really sorry not to be able to put a positive spin on it Thanks

I’m going through very similar. Had a scan at 7 weeks. Know my dates are right and that I ovulated day 13 using clear blue fertility monitor (which is amazing by the way! Had been trying for 5 months prior to getting one). Was told ‘possible’ baby measured 4mm, no heartbeat but that the pregnancy sac was 25mm which is consistent with 7 weeks. It was an abdominal scan so know they aren’t as accurate as transvaginal but should still see a heartbeat at 7 weeks. That was a week ago and I have to go back in a week so can only assume it’s a missed miscarriage. I just can’t bear the waiting for it to happen but the local EPAU are only accepting referrals to check for ectopic and nothing else due to Covid. Have had 2 miscarriages in the past and am 35 now so time isn’t on my side! Know this won’t really make you feel any better but I’m going through it too
