16 week gender scan - baby too small?!

Hi there,

I had a gender scan at 16+3 the other day. Baby was in a weird position, head in my pelvis and basically doing handstands.

I had to swing my hips twice to try and get it to move. It did but the sonographer couldn’t get a clear picture of the genitals. She showed us how if she went one way it looked like a girl and if she went the other it looked like a boy. She then said it was still a bit small to tell definitively.

I’ve had really bad anxiety this whole pregnancy thinking something would go wrong so I immediately started panicking. She said it was measuring correctly but sometimes they’re too small at 16 weeks to determine sex. The whole thing was a bit rushed and I didn’t feel reassured at all upon leaving.

Has anyone else had this happen? Was everything ok?

I’m rebooked for a (free) rescan but I am worrying about her comments as everyone I know who got a 16 week scan managed to find out the sex.

TIA

Some babies just don’t play ball for scans. I had a to do hip swaying and star jumps, the lot at my 20 week scan and it still wasn’t enough for all the measurements. Don’t let it worry you too much & fingers crossed baby is in a better position next time.
Maybe see if you can have a different sonographer next time too. If it’s private then you have paid for the experience and time.

Congratulations on your pregnancy x

OP there is a reason the nhs do anatomy scans (which can tell sex) at 20 weeks- it’s easier to tell anything due to baby being that little bit bigger. With some babies you can tell earlier but it also might have to do with the skill of the sonographer.

I had a fetal medicine consultant scan me with my first and he could tell fetal sex at 12 weeks, but that’s expertise and experience for you.

Don’t borrow worry for now. Flowers

A friend recently went for a scan at 16w and was told by the sonographer that she was '50% sure it's a girl' Confused

She went to a different clinic a week later and was shown very definitively that it was a boy!
