Severe left shoulder pain

I don't know if I'm being a drama queen but I've spent the night not sleeping due to shoulder pain. This is not a pain where I've slept funny, it's a relentless pain.

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and debating whether to ring EPU in case it's a symptom of preeclampsia but I'm worried that I'll be laughed at for being melodramatic and wasting their time over nothing.

From what I can see, preeclampsia doesn't start until 20 weeks but I'm worried it's something serious.

I know shoulder pain is a sign of ectopic pregnancy but this has already been ruled out from scans.

Shoulder pain can be a sign of a few different things, call your maternity assessment unit and get checked out. If its keeping you awake you certainly arent being dramatic. It's not a sign of pre eclampsia but is associated with PE so it's worth getting the once over as they can present in strange ways in pregnancy. Never feel bad about calling if you're worried!

*not a common sign of pre eclampsia

At 13 weeks it's your GP you need to call. It's not a sign of pre-eclampsia but could have some other cause. Daft question but have you taken paracetamol for it?

NatMoz · 09/06/2021 06:54

I haven't but I have never experienced this before pregnant or not. I'm a first time pregnant mum so I could be being a bit irrational as I don't know anything different.

I don't know what to do for the best

@NatMoz I would call your GP and they can always refer you elsewhere.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 09/06/2021 07:05

I had this and it was referred pain from indigestion. It felt like someone was ripping through my shoulder with a knife.
Took a few weeks to diagnose including a trip to A&E as it was so bad. Got prescribed omeprazole which was a lifesaver. Baby is now 2 1/2 and I still have it.

I know that gas build up which you can get as a new symptom when pregnant can cause intense shoulder pain , but call you GP x

GP is concerned so wants me to come in.

Have my appointment shortly

Good luck OP

Irritation in your diaphragm can be felt in the shoulders. I had similar when pregnant and the GP sent me to the EPU for a scan. It was wind.

Hope you got sorted at the GP @NatMoz
