Folic Acid for twin pregnancy

Hey,

I'm 7 weeks tomorrow pregnant with twins and read yesterday they recommend 1000mcg of folic acid per day. I'm already taking pregnacare max which has 400mcg in it and went to buy some more but all I can find are 400mcg which I've bought and so are taking (so on 800mcg) but I'm worried I'm still falling short. What amount was you told to take with your twin pregnancies? Could I take pregnacare and two of the 400mcg which would total 1200mcg?

Call your GP. They should be able to prescribe you the correct dosage and may want you take extra iron too.

I only had my regular multivitamin early on with my twins but was prescribed a few things in the 2nd trimester. Been over 6 years though so I can't remember the dosages.

I didn't take any extra with my twins although the recommendation is for a higher amount - my clinic did give me a prescription when I had their viability scan but by that point I was nearly 8 weeks and they said it wouldn't make much difference as the neural tubes would already have closed (or something to that effect)

You can't just take 2 of the pregnacare (I also asked that!) it apparently doesn't work like that - you can't get it over the counter either - you have to have a prescription

I'm having twins and never been told to take more of anything. I just took one pregnacare and asked midwife was this enough as I was growing two babies and not one, she said dont take anything else. Speak to your midwife.

Thanks everyone. I have my scan with my IVF clinic tomorrow (last weeks was a paid private one) so I will see if they say anything. Getting an appointment with my GP is like looking for gold in my garden atm!

I was prescribed 5mg folic acid tablets to take on to our pregnacare for my twin pregnancy. Your GP should prescribe it for you without any fuss.
