Screening results - Low risk but still worried

Hi all,

I am 14 weeks pregnant. I had my first scan last week at 13+4 and the scan was good, no concern raised.

The NT measurement was 1.8mm. I am 32. I got a letter yesterday with the screening results and they were low risk but while for trisomy 13 and 18 the result was 1 in 50000, for trisomy 21 was 1 in 2000. My Papp a level is 0.87MoM and my B Hcg is 1.93 MoM which I assume is the one raising the risk...
I know that 1 in 2000 is still very low risk but when I saw it I didn’t manage to get totally relaxed. I don’t think is the case to do the NIPT (and don’t really have spare money) but I just don’t know how to relax... any similar situation or suggestions? Do you think that I could be reassured by the 20 weeks scan?
Thank you

Hiya, you should have an appointment with your midwife soon - I'd have a chat with her and see what she can suggest. Try to remember that they are just stats and the whole reason they use all of the readings is because it's a combination of factors. Likewise you could have the best readings in the world and still have a baby with a genetic condition. Our son has a genetic condition but they haven't been able to identify it. We're pregnant again and anxiously waiting our 20wk scan. Just taking one day at a time and trying to stay positive. X

@cloud2021 I would have been absolutely over the moon to receive those results. I am 27 with a healthy bmi non smoker. NT was normal at 1.6. My Papp-a was borderline low and hcg was basically normal and my results return 1 in 362 for trisomy 21. My age related risk is 1160 or something, so considering you're slightly older than me and have got less risk than your age based valuation alone, I think that's really good.

I personally have none stop worried since my 12 week results and I am now 21 weeks. My 20 week scan was completely normal and healthy but I still paid for a panorama test last week as I couldn't settle. If you're worried I'd recommend paying for a private nipt test for your peace of mind, because my worry never left and I wish I'd have done it sooner.

But as I say I would be really over the moon to have for your results x

P.s congratulations on your pregnancy ❤️

Thank you @jessicakxx and congratulations to you too! Yes I will see how I feel and if really desperate will book a nipt.. just don’t want to be over dramatic!

@cloud2021 thank you! Yes see how you get on, there's no time limit on your nipt so you could wait to see how you feel after your 20 week scan. Mine reassured me a huge amount but I still needed to do it for my peace of mind xxx

Hey, this is really weird but my NT was 1.8 and I'm also 32. Mine came back as 1 in 2700 for downs, and 1 in 14000 for Edward and Patau. I don't know what my HCG or PAPPA was so can't really compare those.

I'm classed as low risk too but it is worrying isn't it. I know that at 32 years old we start off at 1 in 750 just based on age alone.

I think waiting for the 20 week scan, although it might seem years away, would be the best. I am lucky in that I will be having a scan tomorrow, but this is because I lost my daughter at 21 weeks last time.

I wouldn't recommend a private scan, but maybe speak with your midwife about bringing the anomaly scan forward to 18 weeks and see if it's possible?

Wish I had better advice but mainly just wanted to say that I'm in the same boat xx

I’m feeling similar, I’m 34 and mine has come back as 1 in 923. Still very low risk (especially when you calculate the %) but I’ve booked a NIPT just for peace of mind. I’ll be 16+5 when I have the scan and bloods done next week. I tried to talk myself out of it but it’s been keeping me awake and bothering me so I’m hoping this puts my mind at ease.

Another way to look at it is that your chance of not having a baby affected by trisomy 21 is 1999 out of 2000. It truly is low risk. I think we live in troubling times and it’s making us very anxious about everything.

doadeer · 06/06/2021 22:57

Would it help to think of it as 0.1%that's 99.9% everything is fine.

My son's nt was 4.8mm... We had quite the scare but he was born healthy.

cloud2021 · 07/06/2021 08:05

Thank you all for the kind responses.. yes I know that looking at the % should really ease the worries... I guess it is my first pregnancy and everything is new and scared something could go wrong! I will speak with the midwife and see what she suggests... congratulations to you all with your pregnancies!

Hello, I am 31, 19 wks and my risk of downs was 1 in 800. If you look at the stats for our age, the chance is 1 in 800 so anything above that is a better than average score! I did mention it to my midwife and she reassured me it isn't considered high risk, but if you are really that worried, you can pay for a private scan to get everything checked again :). I must admit I was worried for about a week and then I totally forgot all about it to be honest!! x

Barbara91 · 07/06/2021 10:39

Hi! My result was 1:2258 for t21 and I am 30. I wasn’t worry but than started to google. It was my biggest mistake. I truly trust my doctor and she said it is a really good result but I couldn’t stop worrying. I went to therapy and turns out I have some issues that is why I am affraid. I had a really long ultrasound at 22 weeks and another one especially for heart. Everything is fine. He is perfect. So I think this fear is only in our mind. This is not real. Do some yoga (helped me a lot) and go to therapy (helped me even more). You can do the nipt test but I think after that you will find something else. I hope everything will be fine :)
