18 weeks and haven't put weight on?

So my BMI is 31 anyway, so I'm far from skinny. I lost 3 stone last year during lockdown through eating better and exercise and now 18 weeks pregnant. Size 14/16, more so 16 now. However I still haven't put on weight! Is this normal? I was fully expecting to be piling on the pounds again. I did lose about 5 pounds in early pregnancy, purely because I had no appetite and I have put that back on, but nothing additional. I'm eating normally again so that's not an issue. I am also beginning to show, so why haven't I put in weight? I'm so confused!

The baby is still tiny so there's no reason why you would have put on weight. I think it's quite normal at 18 weeks.

Honestly don't worry about it OP. I've just had my baby and I didn't start to put weight on until about week 30. In the first 20 weeks I lost a stone and a half through vomiting and no appetite. It took me until week 30 to put that weight back on and I only gained an extra couple of pounds by the time I gave birth at 39+1.

I'm now 2 weeks post partum and am 10 lbs lighter than the day I found out I was pregnant. I asked the midwife as I was worried about the weight I was losing and she told me that anything you eat the baby takes the calories they need first and you just get what's left over so there's no need to worry as long as you're still able to get some food in.

Honestly, at 18 weeks your baby’s weight should be about 200 gr / 7 ounces. That’s about as much as a cup of coffee.

I lost quite a bit of weight to start with and I did not start looking pregnant until the 7th month. I still managed to have the midwives saying I had given birth to a toddler rather than a baby. 🙂

Garman · 31/05/2021 00:53

Do you have put on 5 lbs then? Just because you're beginning to show doesn't mean you'd put on more weight, not in the early days of starting to show.

Garman · 31/05/2021 00:55

*So

Don't worry OP. As you started your pregnancy with a higher BMI it is perfectly fine to not be gaining weight at this point, so long as there aren't any other concerns. In total over the course of your pregnancy you should gain 5-9kg if you have a BMI of 31 at the start, and most of this will probably be from 20 weeks onwards as the baby grows significantly. Have a chat with your midwife when you next see them, but try not to worry. Weight gain is very individual in any case.

Randomness12 · 31/05/2021 06:58

I was shown this by my midwife which gives you a guide based on BMI as to how much weight you are expected to gain. Not 100% sure how accurate it is, but she shared it.

Should say it is an American resource however...

traumatisednoodle · 31/05/2021 07:03

I didn't gain any weight in my secind pregnancy till week 20 ( normal BMI to stat with) she was 7lb 14 and is now 14 and 5ft 7 !

user1471602628 · 31/05/2021 09:21

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I've only gained 6lbs so far. I was technically obese before though, with a BMI of 30.6. My midwife isn't worried and I have a big bump.

Everyone's different and as long as your midwife is happy, please don't worry. You'll probably feel more reassured once you've had your 20 week scan also

lockdownbabyx · 31/05/2021 10:07

Thanks everyone! I wasn't overly worried as he has measured perfect at every scan, I was just curious. Il enjoy it while it lasts 😁 xx

Totally normal and as @garman says you've gained 5lb.

My BMI with 2/3 and 4 has been over 30. I don't usually gain until gone 28wks and then it's usually about a stone. My babies are 9lbers and I'm usually lighter post pregnancy. Then breastfeeding I struggle to keep it off again.

This one was similar but I've gained more in the last few weeks. I'm 38wks and I think have gained 20lb which is just about ok but more than I would have liked.

Dd1 my only healthy BMI pregnancy I gained 4.5st!

Soverymuchfruit · 31/05/2021 13:54

Super reassuring thread. Will stop worrying about my zero weight gain at 14 weeks.

romdowa · 31/05/2021 13:56

I'm 16 weeks and I've gained 2 and a half pounds. I think it varies so much what people will put on

feistymumma · 31/05/2021 16:52

Same here. I weigh exactly the same as I weighed pre pregnancy and I am now 33 weeks. I put it down to not having an appetite the whole pregnancy. All checks are normal and consultant isn't concerned.

xprincessxjanetx · 31/05/2021 19:46

Everyone is different. I have lost weight in all my pregnancies including my last which I lost 2 stone in.

Rose2108 · 01/06/2021 20:04

It's so weird isn't it, I feel like I look really big, my clothes don't fit and my stomach feels rock hard at 4.5 months, but I've only gained 3lb. It's weird to think how different we look when the scales don't change that much! I'm just counting myself lucky as I'm sure it will start to pile on soon x
