Erythromycin safe in pregnancy?

Got a tooth infection. They won't do anything apart from antibiotics but I am allergic to penicillin.

Has anyone else taken erythromycin in pregnancy? I am 31 weeks and I am scared I am going to put my baby at risk.

First time mum so I'm a worrier

I would ring your midwife

The dentist or GP won't prescribe anything unsafe for the baby if you are pregnant.

I think this is definitely a question for your GP and/or MW.

However i also wanted to share a website that i discovered through MN that allows you to check any medication for breast-feeding compatibility. No idea if you’re planning to bf, but if you are it is a real reassurance:

I've had it whilst pregnant. But that doesn't mean you should necessarily. You might be different to me. I think some ABs are only suitable at certain gestations for example. Other drugs you're on might be contraindicated.

So, if your GP has prescribed it, take it. If you've fished an old packet out from the back of the cupboard / got it off a mate, don't take it!

You can always check with the pharmacist when you go to pick it up. I’ve asked about several prescriptions and the pharmacist looks it up on their database they’ve always been very helpful when I’ve done that.

Erythromycin is apparently safe but it gives me sickness/diarrhoea so might want to ask gp for something kinder to your stomach? There is one that is particularly recommended for tooth infections but I can’t remember now what it’s called.

I know this is a thread from earlier this year but I have a bad cough/wheezing and phlegm-y.
Called Dr this am and he listened to me say "hello" and another sentence and the Dr said "I'm organising antibiotics for you"
Never had antibiotics prescribed so easily before!
I asked the pharmacist if they are definitely ok during pregnancy and she said if the benefits outweighthe risks. Confused

Then did a bit of googling and see they can cause cerebral palsy or epilepsy and not I'm just wondering whether I should take them or not.

I'm not really bad but I've had a lot of time off work recently for lots of different illnesses and I don't want this one to get even worse resulting in time off.

Hello :) yeah this is an older post, my baby is here now... Ive heard penicillin is the safest antibiotic to take in pregnancy, are you allergic to that one? If not, pencillin should be absolutely fine Smile

Ahh same as me :( all I can say is a family member took antibiotics whilst pregnant due to a uti, and think about it this way, when a pregnant woman has a bad uti they give them antibiotics to remove it. The gp could lose there jobs if they gave something blatantly dangerous to a pregnant woman. I know the worry, it's the worst but pregnant women have been taking them for years. Just think if you have a bad infection, it's better your body has some thing to fight off the infection so it's strong to continue to carry your baby and help keep your baby healthy Smile
