Am I putting on too much weight?

For background I'm 22 weeks, 5'7 and was 61.5kg pre-pregnancy. I last weighed myself at 20+4 before my scan and was 69kg. I've managed to remain active doing HIIT with weights on average 4x per week since I found out, and I also walk my dog every other day (DH and I take it in turns as he's in training still and focuses better on 1 person, we aren't bad dog owners 😂). Admittedly I've been more lax with food since finding out, but still have a balanced diet and don't go crazy or 'eat for 2' although there have definitely been days where I've eaten more than I need (or I would have thought so) but I've been hungry so listen to my body and don't deprive. I try and make healthy choices as much as possible and eat a variety of fruit and veg, but I'm worried the amount I've put on is too much, especially considering the weight gain supposedly ramps up from the 3rd trimester.

Sorry I realise this is probably really vain and also hard to answer without without full details or a food diary, but I don't have a massive bump and baby girl was measuring small side of average at the anomaly scan so starting to think a lot of this is fat 😳

I could have written this! I'm 5 ft 7 and was 9 st 3 pre-pregnancy, size 8. I'm now 26 weeks and have put on 2 stone (about 12.5kg). Weight gain has been steady since the start. It stressed me out to begin with, but I've come to the conclusion that my body's just going to do what it's going to do. I eat really well, work out a couple of times a week and also walk the dog most days. I do have the odd day where I'm super hungry, but I don't think that accounts for the weight gain.

I'm just trying to focus on eating well and staying active and not worry so much about the number on the scales. It's hard though!

I had put on hardly anything in the first trimester and thought I was doing great. Probably did go a bit overboard eating carbs to try and not be sick! I’m now 28 weeks and have gained 10kg, so 22lbs! Was really hoping to keep the weight gain under 2 stone 🙈 I’m working from home now though so hopefully I will be able to walk my dogs and do home workouts without being so done in every night after work. Lucy Meck is the skinniest person ever and gained 4 stone while she was pregnant and has lost it all again so I don’t feel too bad about it x

You put on what you put on. You can't control it. I put the same amount of weight on in both pregnancies despite being super healthy, exercising lots and eating well in one and being an absolute glutton in the other.

I definitely did 'puff up' in pregnancy and retained a lot of water. A lot of it went very quickly after birth both times.

Fearnecuptea · 20/05/2021 06:44

I wouldn't worry about this, I think I put on 3 stone in total, maybe more! It came off and more afterwards. I was also really active but stopped running and went more towards "gentle exercise" (absolutely loads of walks!) In an attempt to stop my blood pressure getting too high.

Honestly no one looks at a pregnant person and thinks anything of the weight gain you might be fixating on in your head. I was stressing about mine but with hindsight really wished I hadn't cared, like I say it all came off afterwards. Plus a ton is water retention!

Thanks so much everyone! It's given me some perspective, I'm active and eat a balanced diet so it is what it is I suppose. I'm really lucky to be enjoying a straightforward pregnancy so far, so there's no point worrying about losing the weight once she's here, as you've all said, I'm sure a lot of it will be water retention etc. I've always suffered with that when coming on my period so no doubt there's that going on too.

Thank you X

I lost weight in the first trimester (morning sickness), but gained over 2 stone by the end - my waist went from 26 to 40 inches!

It all came off within a couple of months of the birth - couldn’t get enough calories in when breastfeeding.

Just let your body do its thing, and make sure you are really on it with your pelvic floor and core work if you’re doing HIIT stuff while your body is overloaded.

Just a quick note to say that weight gain doesn't necessarily ramp up in the third trimester. I gained weight pretty rapidly from weeks 14-28 and was worried like you, but since around week 29 it's dramatically slowed and I've only gained about a kilo since (35 weeks now). I think most of the second trimester weight was blood and amniotic fluid.

sarah13xx · 20/05/2021 09:49

@kingfisher657 this is good to know, I’m 22 lbs in at 28 weeks and was thinking if it’s another pound a week this is going to be A LOT 🤣

ELBlack · 20/05/2021 09:54

@verbena87 I also started off with a 26 inch waist but that is quickly disappearing 😂 I didn't lose weight in the first trimester because although I had nausea I found eating was the only thing that helped. I am doing pelvic floor 2/3 times a day, and being really careful with my core as I don't want to cause damage, especially now the bump is coming!

@kingfisher657 ah thank you! That's helpful to know, I don't weigh myself often but definitely noticed I have times where I'm putting on and then times when I'm slowing down.

Ultimately I know putting on the weight is good as I want her to grow and be a healthy weight 😁

I wouldn’t worry OP. I agree with another poster you can’t control it.

It could be a lot of water that’s what happened to me I was tiny until around 6 months. After that I got big we’ll just my bump. I wore a size 12 in tops whilst pregnant.

Verbena87 · 20/05/2021 20:00

Good work on core/pelvic floor; sounds like you’re doing great. Mine ended up being 10lb9oz on arrival (wanted the midwife to wheel us through the hospital to find the consultant who told me if I was underweight and would have a baby with low birthweight in the first trimester when I was pukey and miserable 🤣).

ELBlack · 20/05/2021 20:30

@Verbena87 omg!! You're an absolute hero!

🤣 would recommend not going to 42 weeks before accepting induction if baby’s measuring big. Next time I’m going to have a reasonably-sized, punctual one.

Lots of luck for the rest of your pregnancy and beyond.

ELBlack · 20/05/2021 21:50

Thank you @Verbena87 best wishes to you!

I was just over 8 stone pre pregnancy, I now weigh 13 stone 🤣 I’m just going with it my body will do what it has to do, this is my third child so it can all be lost after the baby I will worry about it then for the time being I’m embracing feeling like a whale 🤣🤣 xXx

ELBlack · 21/05/2021 07:53

@Mumoftwo2021 thanks for your message! I think that's what I was worrying about, post pregnancy, because I was really happy with my figure and felt really confident for the first time in years so I didn't want to go back to feeling bad forever 😂 x

I gained weight steadily with both pregnancies throughout. Four stone in both, seemed like my body worked that way in pregnancy as I have always been slim usually.
Lost easily over few months following birth.
