Has the NHS guidance changed on hard cheese?

I thought parmesan was safe in pregnancy as it's a hard cheese, and it doesn't matter if hard cheese is pasteurised or unpasteurised. Thought the NHS website said the same. However looking at the website today it says you can have 'all hard pasteurised cheeses such as cheddar, Stilton and parmesan'. But isn't parmesan always unpasterised?! Anyone know if this advice has changed?

You can have hard pasteurised and unpasteurised cheeses as they have a low moisture content

But I think you're right and they've changed the page on nhs

Nhs Wales still says they're OK

Yeah saw NHS Wales still said it was ok - very strange! Might ask my midwife... I'm adamant it's changed recently, although NHS website says it hasn't been updated since 2020!

It definitely used to say it was ok
Don't know why it's been changed

And any cheese is OK if its in a cooked dish e.g. Blue and mould ripened cheeses

@BatPrint did you manage to get any clarification on this?! Just bought some Parmesan too and have seen the guidance has changed!

Nat4392 · 23/05/2021 17:08

Nhs guidelines say pasteurised Parmesan is fine

I guess it depends on whether it’s pasteurised? I buy Parmesan grated from Lidl and it even says on the packaging not suitable for pregnant women, young children and elderly - I had no clue when I was actually pregnant though.

I’ve been eating Parmesan throughout as it definitely did used to say ‘all hard cheese’ not just pasteurised ones.

I think I’ll just carry on eating it!

dementedpixie · 23/05/2021 17:36

Hard cheese doesn't have a high moisture content and that's why it's supposed to be ok to eat parmesan whether it's pasteurised or not

I'd still eat it tbh

BatPrint · 24/05/2021 20:11

@iverunoutofinspiration no I haven't yet, just been avoiding eating it! Will ask when I next see my midwife but that's not for a couple of weeks.

And if you're adding it to hot food then it's even safer
