Bacterial Vaginosis in 2nd trimester

Hi,

Not sure if anyone has had a similar experience but any words of wisdom would help.

I'm currently 20+2 weeks with my first pregancy. I've been in and out of EPU and now MAU throughout my 1st trimester due to spotting.

I then had to go in for a check last week as had excessive fluid like discharge and they were concerned it was my amniotic fluid which fortunately it wasn't.

I then had more brown spotting the evening after my 20 week scan & when they did an internal exam they were concerned about the amount of fluid and browny/green discharge (sorry if TMI!).

Again, they swabbed to rule out amniotic fluid leak (which again it did rule out) but concerned about fact it might be an infection, most likely bacterial vaginosis.

Unfortunately due to the weekend I won't get my swab results to confirm this until Mon/Tues so can't start any treatment until then.

Having read up about it it can cause risk of late miscarriage, premature birth or low birth weight so feeling upset about it. Has anyone ever had it before and been ok? I'm really struggling with anxiety this pregnancy and this has just flared it up big time.

I had it at 28 weeks, I had a weeks worth of antibiotics and it cleared up. I wouldn't stress yourself about it as it's a very small risk of miscarriage etc. Studies show that it's a very small link. I am now 32 weeks with a big baby 🤣

Thanks @rbetty that's useful to know! I know I need to try and not stress. It just hasn't been an easy pregnancy so far and this just doesn't help. Hopefully will get my results back soon so can get it treated. Glad to hear you're pregnancy is going well Smile

@LunaDreams I had BV which was found by EPU after spotting for three days at 10 weeks. I’m now 29 weeks. I didn’t get a call with my swab results until I believe 5-6 days later and by the time I could speak to the GP and get antibiotics it had been at least a week. Hopefully you’ll get antibiotics tomorrow and it’ll clear it up x

@LunaDreams I also had thrush recently too, only had a swab done because I had more spotting - I don’t seem to get any symptoms with either thrush or BV apart from spotting!

I had BV for my entire pregnancy. It was symptomless but antibiotics didn't help! I know it can lead to premature birth but I don't think you should be unduly worried.

Thanks for all your responses. I chased my swab results which all came back negative which I am shocked by considering the doctor's reaction to my internal examination and the amount of strange colours I am seeing on my pad!
MAU understandably won't do anything else so guess I need to go back to midwife or GP. What a palava!

@LunaDreams pregnancy causes all sorts of strange discharge. I did another swab at about 20 weeks as I was getting some thick yellowish stuff and it came back normal x

@MintGreenLife yea I am beginning to accept that this may just be part of my pregnancy experience! The only thing I haven't been tested for is thrush so I might just talk to someone about that then accept my fate!
