Im 38 weeks pregnant I was late getting my 28 week bloods done due to isolating and it wasnt done till 32 weeks. Bloods came back low iron and was put on iron tablets. My bloods where checked again at 37 weeks and my iron is even lower, midwife said my body musnt be absorbing the iron properly and I have to go down to her first thing in morning for more bloods and I will probably need an iron infusion threw IV. Im worried now ive been so low on iron this whole time what effects its had on baby and I? Also worried about getting the IV, i hate needles and getting bloods etc I can do it when need be but its just never nice, has anyone had one before or is it painful?

Oh love, sorry you are going through this. I haven’t had an IV infusion of iron before but had IV antibiotics and they’ll most likely put a needle in your hand to get the infusion in. Please try not to worry. Babies usually get the nutrients they need from you, but it’s you that ends up suffering a bit! Please do ask the midwife tomorrow though.

Having vitamin c with iron helps absorb it. Things like dairy, tea and coffee don’t help with iron absorption. I’m low on iron too and have been having supplements and red meat/green smoothies regularly to try and boost my intake. Any chance you can eat a steak tonight??

@PFin Hey I had the IV in my last pregnancy during the third trimester as my iron was low and I was having a hard time taking it orally.
I had two lots of IV and to be honest it was no bother at all, after the initial prick of the needle you can’t feel any discomfort. I laid in the bed until it completed which was relatively quickly and then was free to go home. It made a difference x

@Bathmatt thank you yes midwife kind of said that too but this has all happened along with a slight drop in her growth from 50th to 40th centile. Ive been trying with what im eating too so was so surprised when she said it is lower. You know what hubby went out and bought 3 bigs steaks and made me 2 lol

@Worriesome the process doesnt sound to bad and if it made the difference then its worth it.
