12wks - light brown spotting and cramping

I’m 12w pregnant today. Yesterday and today I’ve had two instances of light brown jelly like discharge/spotting. I’ve now got light continual cramps in the front and lower back ache.

I called the midwife earlier for advice and she said to call the out of hours early pregnancy unit if it gets painful or red. It’s uncomfortable but not painful, and no red blood and no more discharge since.

Any ideas? My 12w scan isn’t for another week and a half so I’m worrying.

Hi op I reckon you should get checked ASAP. Give you peace of mind. You will be in my prayers. Keep me updated xx

I’ve called our “out of hours” number at the main city hospital (as per midwife and website recommendation) and they were bloody useless. Didn’t know what to recommend and suggested I see how it goes or call 111 if I’m worried or go to A&E. I could have googled that!

It could be something to do with your placenta. I had cramps and bleeding at 14 weeks and it was due to low lying placenta and when the placenta moves it can cause a bleed. I had red blood first then brown spotting for a few days. Baby is fine. Hopefully you can get checked out and I hope everything is fine. Just wanted to share my experience as I always presumed bleeding/spotting meant the worst but that's not always the case xx

I had this at 12+6, called the EPU and they said to monitor it and tell them if it persisted for 48 hours. I had my scan 2 days later (2 days ago) and I was so nervous before it but all was well with baby, no explanation for the spotting which I haven’t noticed since. I think my cramping is due to constipation and gas.

Can you call the EPU again today? Mine said they would have arranged a scan for me if my 12 week scan hadn’t been so soon. Hope all is well for you, it’s scary but brown spotting and mild cramping are pretty common from what I read and not necessarily a bad sign.
